Development XI make 281 on opening day

SLC Development XI tour of England

- BY AMINDHA DE ALWIS

SLC Development XI were dismissed for 281 runs on day one of their first-class game versus Hampshire, which commenced in Southampton yesterday.

After having elected to bat first, the visitors were reduced to 32 for three before Nuwanindu Fernando and Dhananjaya Lakshan combined to steer the team safely to Lunch.

Fernando reached his half-century soon after the break, but both batsmen fell in quick succession to opening bowler Josh Turner, who, on his first-class debut, claimed figures of 5 for 31.

The middle-order pair of Santhush Gunathilake (53) and Dunith Wellalage (44) put on 106 runs for the sixth wicket, but similar to the pair before them, both lost their wickets soon after the tea interval.

A few useful runs from Dilum Sudeera and Ashian Daniel down the order saw the Development XI reach 281 before they were bowled out in the 87th over of the day, leaving the Hampshire openers a solitary over to negotiate.

Left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera, entrusted with bowling that one over, had his team end the day on a high note as he struck with his fourth ball, after which stumps were called.
