AG DIRECTS TO ARREST 22

including former ministers for attacking peaceful protesters

The Attorney General yesterday directed the IGP and the Senior DIG in charge of the CID to immediatel­y arrest and produce 22 persons, including MPS and former ministers, in connection with the attack on the peaceful protests at Galle Face and opposite Temple Trees.

The direction has been given after taking into considerat­ion police investigat­ion reports into the attacks together with the Attorney General’s Department, investigat­ions of the incident.

The Attorney General has further instructed the IGP to immediatel­y arrest Senior DIG Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon, in addition to the politician­s involved in the crime. Among those ordered to be arrested were MPS Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Sanjeewa Edirimanne and Milan Jayatilake, Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando, and Ex Chairman of the Federation of self employed Mahinda Kahandagam­a, and Dan Priyasad a social activist.

When inquired about the instructio­ns given regarding the former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, sources from the Attorney General’s Department said that steps would be taken to take action against former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa after taking a closer look at the summary of the investigat­ions
