Achievements by Sri Lankan women abroad
It was good to hear that Deena Tissera, a Sri Lankan girl recently won the Hilton/ Woodside'/ Stockehill ward in Aberdeen in the local government elections. Deena was born here and schooled at The British School in Colombo. She moved to Aberdeen where she qualified as a doctor of medicine at The Robert Gordon University in
Aberdeen. Her father was a doctor, and she used to accompany her father on his humanitarian work to those in need in various parts of our country. She was a former Beauty Queen who participated in the Miss Sri Lanka, Miss World pageant in 2010. My granddaughter campaigned for her in Aberdeen and when she told me I asked if she was from the conservative Party as I was with the Young conservatives in my youth in London. Dina is Labour party and is an elected representative for the North East of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the Scottish Excecutive of the Labour Party. We also hear that Shazna Muzamil has also won a seat in local government elections in England. It's good to hear of achievements by Sri Lankan women abroad, although its our nation's loss.
