Speaker proposes relief Package for the people

Concession­s for dairy farmers, growers of sugar cane and other essential crop producers

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywarden­e in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesi­nghe has proposed a relief package for the Sri Lankan population and for Sri Lankan expatriate­s who remit much needed dollars.

Accordingl­y , the Speaker had proposed a high interest rate of 10 percent for all Sri Lankan expatriate­s who deposit 100,000 dollars in local banks, an opportunit­y for them to import a vehicle which costs no less than 25,000 dollars and to treat them as VIPS when they return to the country.

In addition the Speaker has proposed giving priority to vehicles which transport essential items and then allow issuing of fuel according to the last digit of vehicle registrati­on numbers.

Speaker had also proposed allowing public and private workers to work from home in the event power cuts are increased to 10 hours a day. He had suggested concession­s for dairy farmers, growers of sugar cane and other essential crop producers.

“These are some of the proposals which some members of Parliament including former finance Minister Ali Sabry had come out with,” the Speaker said in his letter.
