Bringing a one-of-a-kind, world class product to the Sri Lankan market

-

Just one week ahead of World Tea Day, Bogawantalawa Teas delivers an unforgettable and unmatchable High Grown product range to the local consumer market to suit every palate. Dr. Thusitha Bandara, Director - Low Country Operations, Sustainability and Research & Development, Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC stated this at the recent prestigious unveiling of Bogawantalawa’s worldclass product range to the Sri Lankan market. He was speaking at a standup panel-discussion on sustainability and the future of the Sri Lankan Tea Industry. While stimulating much fervour and excitement he educated and enlightened the distinguished gathering about the Climate-positive processes from cultivation to shelf as well as the stringent sustainability measures followed at Bogawantalawa estates and the highest of standards that were maintained overall.

Endorsing the sustainability measures taken at Bogawantalawa, the Director / CEO of Bogawantalawa Tea Ceylon PLC, Mr. Almas Marikkar, congratulated Dr. Bandara on his sustainability achievements and taking the Bogawantalawa plantations beyond a Carbon-neutral status together with 100% renewables. Responding to a question from the audience, Dr. Bandara, a panelist at the recently concluded Global Dubai Tea Forum, stated that Bogawantalawa Teas had invested millions of dollars in sustainability practices and that they intended to do more in the years ahead.

Dr. Bandara further stated that “our desire to nurture natures’ pristine gifts has made us adopt Climate-smart Agriculture with a view to addressing the challenges of climate-change. At Bogawantalawa we are proud to extract the best from nature through ecologically friendly practices. Our commitment to sustainable cultivation has given us the edge to comply with UN SDG-2030 well in-advance. All these have made us the world’s first Climate-positive Tea Company”, he added.

He added that Bogawantalawa Teas is now attempting to educate the local consumers about Sri Lanka’s ‘seven seasons of tea’, a fact that is more famous outside the island, especially among the ever-evolving community of tea-drinkers in Japan and most European countries. The Golden Valley is renowned for these ‘seasons’ as are the surrounding Dimbulla and Pussellawa ranges.

“It is no secret that some of the leading Brands in the world use Bogawantalawa teas to enhance their product quality”, he expressed positively and further elaborated that “our exports are over 80 percent fairtrade certified, a testimony to the welfare of our workers. Setting the tone for worker well-being in the tea industry, Bogawantalawa’s offerings at home are in line with international standards”, he stated.

Mr. Niraj de Mel, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, who was the chief guest on the occasion expressed positive remarks about the superior quality of the Kotiyagala tea, one of the premium products in the launched collection. “I was fortunate to have sampled it recently and it was quite simply superior”, he stated. He went onto endorse the sustainability measures taken at Bogawantalawa and emphasised that all other tea plantation companies should focus on improving the ‘Ceylon Tea’ quality to what it was once reputed for.

Mr. D J Ambani, Chairman of Metrocorp Group & the Bogawantalawa Tea companies, stated “we are proud to bring our globally accredited, award-winning teas to the local market. Sourced directly from the Golden Valley of Ceylon Tea and recognized as the World’s First Climate-positive Teas make our product excellence not only a formidable accomplishment but also a cause for national pride.”

Bogawantalawa Teas’ penchant for being unique has ensured recognition from the Green Apple Awards at the House of Parliament of the United Kingdom, the International Green Environment Awards, the World Sustainability Awards and the Global Sustainable Food Awards.

Being the trendsetter in sustainable practices, Bogawantalawa’s mission for a greener tomorrow through superior quality products remains a continuing brand legacy.
