ECLECTIC ETHOS

Match isn’t the way!

- BY Monita Pesumal

Eclectic’ is loosely defined as something that’s made up of a variety of styles or sources – an assortment, wide-ranging or a mix. In terms of interiors, this style blends a variety of periods and concepts – and it combines a varied mix of textures, shapes and finishes. A signature of this theme is the multitude of fabrics and colours used – both plain and patterned. It is also sometimes called ‘quirky.’

The look is very easy to achieve with Indian or Turkish inspired homes mainly due to the stark colours, tapestry and prints used. But if you don’t follow the rules, mixing and matching can be extremely overwhelming, and result in cluttered spaces. So here are some guidelines when going for that quirky look.

COMMON COLOURS Although furniture, art and textile patterns don’t have to match, it’s critical that at least one common colour does. Go for a hue that can be applied in various parts of the room. This one shade will have to serve as the dominant colour in your concept.

BOLD STATEMENTS A statement piece doesn’t have to be confined to furniture. It’s any object where your eclectic theme can shine. Think of it as a piece that’s a little weird or wacky, and placed big and bold to stand out from the crowd. It could even be a floor to ceiling abstract oil on canvas or pop artwork. Being eclectic is also about careful curation. DESIGN PERIODS Use varying patterned rugs and cushions within the colour scheme, and introduce different design periods to your room. Geometric patterned rugs, floral headboards and polka dot cushions in shades of brown or earth tones are also some possibilities.

KEEP IT SIMPLE That’s right! When it comes to the walls, simplicity does the trick. Pick a neutral shade (white works too). Remember, the walls will serve as your blank canvas as you concentrate on statement artworks, pops of colour and a mix of textures to create an aesthetically pleasing ensemble.

SHARP CONTRASTS Use different textures such as wood, marble, stone, leather, brick or more to create your eclectic space. A wooden coffee table, leather sofa and brick edged mantelpiece are some combinations that will serve you well.

GET A GOOD MIX Remember the phrase about ‘something old, something new’? Practise it by mixing quirky finds from flea markets with practical and contemporary commercial furniture. It’s perfectly acceptable to let your old collections tell a brandnew story.
