Autumn is in the air

- – Living

Summer may or may not have gone out like a dying ember but come rain or shine, September is here! And over in the land of the crescent moon spanning two continents, it’s time to get lost in the haze that is modern art. With the Contemporary Istanbul annual art fair taking place in the eponymous city, there is so much to look out for in addition to historic landmarks, noisy bazaars, kebabs and all kinds of Turkish delights.

After the Germans start guzzling beer at Oktoberfest’s commencement on 21 September, the Irish celebrate the arrival of the oyster season with the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival. This gourmet extravaganza involves a lot of shucking and tasting, and a parade and gala ball.

Sri Lankans can probably borrow a thing or two from South Africa as the

‘rainbow nation’ celebrates its Hermanus Whale Festival. The end of September sees visitors gathering to watch the migrating southern right whales as they pass by the country’s Western Cape.

In the jungles of Minneriya, ‘the Gathering’ of Sri Lanka’s majestic elephants is coming to an end as the rains start to set in – again! This annual event is a phenomenon that’s been taking place for millennia.

For us islanders, September is a rainy month when the clouds mock us with threatening dark looks as well as frequent (unannounced) showers. But we never back away from having a good time since we’re blessed with different climatic conditions across the country through the year.

The ninth month on the calendar is also when Sri Lankans start getting into an end of the year mood – possibly our alltime favourite period.

If the island gets too wet, damp or soggy, one of Asia’s hottest racing events is only a four hour flight away as ‘Lion City’ hosts the Singapore Grand Prix on the Marina Bay Street Circuit from 20 to 22 September. With Gwen Stefani performing and celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal showcasing his culinary skills in his Singapore debut – in addition to all those high-octane thrills – this is one race to be at.

Stay tuned as Sylvester Stallone reclaims the silver screen with ‘Rambo: Last Blood.’ And if you’re a movie buff, get ready to scream for your life while clutching your popcorn as you survive ‘It Chapter Two’ or enjoy the cuteness of Everest the friendly yeti in ‘Abominable.’

Lots to savour, tons of fun things to do… so here’s three cheers for a September to remember!
