Look before you leap!

When you’re heading to a popular tourist destination, planning is relatively easy. There are plenty of well researched travel resources you can consult. You can also leave a large chunk of your trip open since iconic cities like Paris and Bangkok have a wide and accessible range of experiences for all kinds of travellers. However, stepping off the beaten track calls for a different approach. While incredibly rewarding, it also requires more intensive planning – from choosing the right destination to nailing down the specifics.
TRY RESEARCH Magazines and the internet are good sources to identify upandcoming destinations. However, consider the readership the publication is targeting. For instance, an American website might classify temples in central Bali or Zen gardens in Kyoto as ‘fresh and unknown’ because Western travellers aren’t familiar with them. Go beyond the obvious publications and ‘top 10’ lists, and dig deeper into the destination to get a better picture of its popularity. Atlas Obscura is a great free resource to get some inspiration. MAKE A MATCH Keep in mind that lesser known spots are likely to have fewer options for accommodation, access, transport, dining and so on. So it’s important to do your homework before you arrive. For some travellers, doortodoor access is a priority while others enjoy long hikes and rambles to reach remote wonders. Some tourists want a hotel with 24/7 room service while others prefer home stays with local families. Does your potential destination offer the types of experiences you want?
SEEK ADVICE Look for guidance from locals or people who’ve already visited your chosen destination. The message boards on popular travel websites or even expat sites are useful sources for information. Like A Local Guide features tips and tours by local experts while Travelfish offers excellent free as well as paid resources for ‘under the radar’ attractions in Southeast Asia.
BE PREPARED If you’re venturing off the beaten travel path for the first time, it’s best to lock up as many specifics as possible in advance. Remember, emerging destinations often aren’t very tourist friendly especially if you don’t speak the local language. Book your accommodation and plan how to get there from the airport or train station. Local excursions can generally be booked for cheaper rates online. But if the options seem limited, book your place in advance so you don’t miss out on the main reason for your visit!
