Taking a break

- Gaia Kodithuwakku Fitness professional BY Andrea Melisa

What’s the deal with liquid diets? They help weight loss with minimum effort. Does that sound too good to be true? Well there’s more to this than meets the eye – and we’re excited to share insights from certified fitness professional Gaia Kodithuwakku.

Q: What are the benefits of a liquid diet?

A: I have been on liquid fasts a couple of times in the past, and experienced drastic changes in terms of weight loss, improvement in digestion, clearer skin, intense detoxification and an overall improvement in health.

The best part is that a liquid diet gives the digestive system a break from constant work. However, it’s best to avoid a ‘liquids only’ fast by consuming a few solid food items like fresh vegetables and fruits if you suffer from acid reflux or gastritis.

Q: How safe are liquid diets?

A: I think you should research this subject instead of pursuing such methods as a shortcut to losing weight. These are merely tools that can help speed the process and make you healthier; but in no way should they be abused.

Q: How long should you stay on a liquid diet?

A: Start slowly – maybe a day at a time if you’re a beginner – and work your way up. I’ve been through a few three day fasts but when I know my body is demanding solid food as fuel, I comply and do what’s necessary.

Q: What can you eat while you’re on a complete liquid diet?

A: Any fresh organic produce should be fine. Stay away from processed food, cooked food, meat and animal products, and salt – since the purpose is to give your digestive system a break from toxins and a heavy workload.

Q: How much physical activity is needed to achieve the best results from a liquid diet?

A: Moderate activity levels especially if you are new to fasting. We need to be kind to our bodies during detoxification.

Q: Any more words of advice for our readers…?

A: Don’t get caught up with trends; approach these tools with a deeper awareness. If you come from a place of self-love with a desire to evolve, you won’t go wrong. Be patient and compassionate to your body.
