Exotic decor

- BY Monita Pesumal

If you want to redesign your home based on Arabian themes, remember two words: opulence and luxury. This decor concept is not about cutting corners but rather, about splurging. Think impressive chandeliers, plush Persian carpets and elaborate sofas, along with heavy drapes, giltedged chairs and ornate mirrors.

WARM RICH HUES Unlike other interior decor themes, the spectrum of colours used in Arabian themed homes can range from rose gold to rich dark chocolate – any colours that invoke warmth, sophistication and luxury.

Strong colours take precedence over neutrals while original shades like deep plum, magenta, amber, golden-yellow, burnt sienna, bright crimson, cinnamon, dark-blue and olive-green are encouraged.

LESS FURNITURE Although the furniture used to decorate these homes is minimal, most pieces are encrusted with ivory, pearl, stones and even gold. Items that can be used to add some Middle Eastern flair include hexagonal or octagonal side tables, carved chests and ottomans with geometrical patterns or colourful arabesque motifs.

For example, the more elaborate furniture is inlaid with rosewood or teak and decorated with mosaics. You can find these items at international exhibitions or antique dealers. LAVISH TEXTILES Bright shimmery cushions often embroidered with sequins, lush ornamental rugs and velvet or satin curtains are often the highlights you need to bring a touch of Arabian culture into your home. Lavish floor cushions and silky bolsters are also mandatory elements.

Trimming and tassels on pillows, and shiny table mats and table runners, are not considered gaudy – they are widely used. If you’re good at DIY, adding tassels and sequins onto brightly-coloured cushion covers will not pose too much of a challenge.

ORNAMENTATION Although Arabian homes are generally clutter free, an emphasis is placed on items or objets d’art that are ornamental in nature. These include birdcages, marble figurines, paintings of inanimate objects, coloured vases, and a multitude of candles in various shapes and sizes. Ornaments in silver, copper and other metals are common in these homes as are tall round or oval decorative mirrors.

LIVELY LIGHTING Ottoman, mosaic or ‘Turkish lamps,’ as they are popularly known, can liven up even the dullest of living rooms. What’s unique about these lamps is that they are diverse in their use and can be utilised to decorate anything from a garden to a bedroom. A word of caution – set the lamps against a plain backdrop as they give off the colours of the rainbow when lit.
