Mel Gibson’s manse
MAD MAX MALIBU MANSE
Multi-talented Academy Award winner Mel Gibson has propelled his net worth through his acting career and real estate investments to reach US$ 425 million. It’s a far cry from when he moved with his middle-class parents from New York to Australia at the age of 12.
Gibson studied acting at Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Arts and soon became a movie star at 23 after his lead role in the 1979 Australian movie Mad Max for which he earned only US$ 15,000.
Today, whether acting, directing, inciting controversy or acquiring some of the most romantic properties on the planet, Mel does it with passion.
From action figure to comedy and stage to film, he has proven himself in the entertainment industry as evidenced by his many awards. He has funnelled that income into property investments with holdings in Australia, Costa Rica, the US and Mago Island in Fiji.
Gibson’s real estate choices reflect his penchant for the earthy and rustic with a strong romantic vibe cushioned by
lush plantings. Such is the case with his Malibu mansion in California, which he purchased in 2008 and has now put on the market for almost 14.5 million dollars.
Gibson’s estate can be accessed through a long drive that ends in a large motor court.
The entry to the 6,578 square foot house is through a two storey foyer that opens into an expansive room with high vaulted beamed ceilings, stone arched doorways, large chandeliers, dark wooden floors, walls of transformed French doors exposing canyon and ocean views, and a grand stone inglenook style fireplace.
In addition to five bedrooms and an equal number of bathrooms, there is a large French country kitchen with bespoke cabinetry; marble countertops with an island for work and casual dining; and a den, gym and family room. Outside, there are terraces with ocean views, one of which has a romantic vine covered pergola for alfresco dining. In addition to two swimming pools, there’s also a three car garage with a two bedroom guesthouse above it.
