Family rooms

- BY Pallavi Pinakin

The family room is the nerve centre of any home. It’s where the family including kids, parents and grandparents gather to unwind, as well as spend time with each other. This is the room where familial bonds are forged and lifelong memories are created, making it the single most important space in any home especially one with growing children. Here are some ideas to make your family room more conducive to spending quality time together.

INVITING SPACES In smaller homes, the family room often doubles up as the living room where people are received. In such a scenario, you may choose to create an ambience that is elegant and formal, rather than fun and casual. However, it can be difficult for family members to let their hair down and relax in a space that exudes a standoffish air, and features lots of breakable or expensive items.

Remember, your family uses this space every day while guests will only see it once in a while. So choose a look that’s more welcoming than intimidating, and stow away fancy ornaments and furniture out of sight till you expect company. Flowers can also help add temporary pizzazz to a laid-back space. FUN VARIATIONS Being ‘lived in’ doesn’t mean your family room can’t have trendy decor. Take your cue from the aesthetic in the rest of the house and remember that ‘fun’ doesn’t have to translate into bright colours or quirky posters. Comfortable seating and a few playful touches can transform a rustic, minimalist or even dark interior into a warm and welcoming space.

Statement pieces like a rocking chair, relaxed swing, or foosball (table football) or pingpong table – if you have the space – can help set the right tone for relaxed afternoons and evenings in the company of loved ones. CUSTOMISING IT A family room should express the personalities and shared interests of the people who are going to occupy it. If your spouse is a bookworm, create a reading nook by the window. Does grandma love to collect postcards? Use her favourites to make a hanging mobile or decorate a gallery wall.

If the family loves to play board games together, set up a play area with a low table surrounded by comfy mattress seating and big cushions with your collection of games displayed prominently. By honouring your family’s unique passions, you’ll be able to create a space that’s cosy and inviting.
