Living (Sri Lanka)

Masked and costumed

-

We’ve reached October! For those of you who stopped counting the days since reverting to your somewhat regular lives after the curfew was lifted, this simply means that we have to get through three more months before we’re done with this ridiculous year!

Give yourself a pat on the back and three cheers – you’ve made it this far in 2020’s twisted real life version of Jumanji!

Jokes aside, October brings with it chilly winds of renewed hope. Countries that experience autumn will see the leaves on trees painting the landscape red, brown and orange. Families celebrating Halloween will begin to see their front porches decorated with jack-o’-lanterns and scary ghouls.

Cafes and restaurants will start serving their most popular pumpkin flavoured treats and little children will dress up as their favourite characters even if trick-or-treating is out this year.

The one thing we will have in common during this period is that we’ll all be walking around wearing masks though unfortunately, there won’t be any candy to look forward to. But hey, at least you’ll be allowed inside your Uber to get to work.

As many countries prepare to celebrate the arrival of autumn, even if it’s in small doses with only family or housemates, Sri Lankans too will be celebrating Halloween and dressing up for the holiday.

Check all your favourite watering holes because the chances are that there’ll be theme nights soon. So make sure you’ve picked your costume… and get ready for nights of fun.

If you can’t find anything worth your while, we suggest running through a classic horror movie with a large glass of chardonnay and some buttery popcorn. Nothing quite says Halloween like a good dose of Freddy Krueger to keep you up at night!

In the event all is fine on the health front, it’s possible that the International Conference on Gender, Sexuality and Diversity Studies will take place on 15 and 16 October in Rome.

The programme aims to provide a platform for researchers, academics and activists from around the world to address the need for equal rights, opportunities and better solutions in the thematic areas.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So be sure to wear that pink ribbon proudly in support of those battling the disease… and those who have survived it.
