JANUARY JOYS

Wipe the slate clean

- – Living

It’s 2021… and as of midnight on 31 December, we hoped the slate of last year was wiped clean. We’ve be given a chance to remove the bad juju that’s been shadowing us through 2020. It’s time for all those ‘new year, new me’ selfie captions, and to wince over any embarrassing New Year’s Eve pictures or videos. And it is also the time to joke over those drunken New Year’s resolutions while inwardly promising to fulfil at least one of them.

And it’s time to pursue all the goals you had to put on hold last year. It’s time to run that marathon, climb the highest mountain, take a train ride on a whim and zip line through the jungle Tarzan style while screaming at the top of your lungs – hopefully sooner rather than later.

It’s time to enrol yourself in a class you never thought you’d take, learn how to bake or learn a language you always wished you could speak. If you’ve been keeping up with Netflix, then there’s nothing sexier than learning French right now.

Go on a blind date, give yourself that haircut you saw on your favourite actor, dye your hair an insane colour (we hear neon is all the rage these days) and get that tattoo you saved on your Pinterest board.

Read that book you borrowed from a friend and never returned because you simply didn’t have the time to read it. Or start writing the book you’ve always wanted to pen if you’re not working – even if you’re going to be the only one to read it.

With many people starting a new job or relationship or even healing from the past year’s wounds, perhaps this is the year to buck up on courage and find someone to talk to – taking care of your mental wellbeing should be at the top of your list.

Start the Zumba class you’ve been dodging or put your gym membership to use. Give yourself some self-love… because you’ve earned it!

Book those airline tickets now because prices have come down and this is the perfect time to fly. Enjoy your favourite artistes performing live… because there’s nothing more exhilarating than watching them in person.

This is your year. So take back the time you’ve lost – give yourself the chance to grow, smile and most importantly, celebrate life!
