Janaka 180 as Chilaw Marians amass 441
A swashbuckling 180 in 187 balls by Janaka Gunaratne saw Chilaw Marians amass a mammoth 441 for 9 against Moors SC on day two in their Premier Tier ‘A’ cricket encounter at Braybrooke Place.
This was in reply to Moors SC’S score of 338 which came on the back of 136 made by Gihan Rupasinghe. Janaka’s knock comprised 16 boundaries and eight towering sixes.
Warwickshire opening batsman and former England Under 19 team captain Varun Chopra playing his first match for Tamil Union showed that he is a batsman of class.
Varun who opened the innings for Tamil Union against SSC at the P. Sara Stadium slammed an unbeaten 233 with 25 boundaries and a six helping Tamil Union, to amass 416 against SSC at the P. Sara Stadium.
SSC ended the second day making 245 for 1 thanks to unbeaten knocks of 116 and 115 by skipper Kaushal Silva and Tharanga Paranavithana who were associated in an unbroken 220 runs stand for the second wicket.
The fine bowling effort of Baduereliya CC’S left arm spinner Roshan Laksiri was matched by NCC’S Angelo Perera. Angelo showed that he is a reliable middle order batsman when he made 119 n.o with seven boundaries and seven sixes at the NCC ground. Angelo came to the rescue of NCC after Roshan ran through the top order batting and had them struggling on 126 for 5 by putting on an unbroken 148 runs with Muditha Fernando. This enabled them to end the day on 267 for 5. Ragama CC took the upper hand against Lankan CC when play stopped on day two at the Colts ground. This low scoring first innings game saw Ragama CC take the initiative when they bowled out Lankan CC for 211 in the second innings.
Ragama CC chasing 189 runs for victory was 104 for 1 needing just 85 runs with nine wickets in hand when
play starts on the final day today.
