Maliththa MMV bags the Excellency Award in 2011

- - Sujitha Miranda

Maliththa Madya Maha Vidyalaya gained the Excellency Award 2011 as the best Environmental Friendly School in the Badulla District. It is a distinguished mixed school and is situated in Mahathanna GS Division and has been selected as one of the thousand secondary schools in the area.

The school was established as Maliththa Multi Language School in 1934 under the leadership of Mr.d.p.hettiarachchi with 148 students. In 1964 the school earned the status of Maha Vidyalaya. Then onwards the school had a rapid infrastructure and development infrastructure and education. In 1994 the school was placed under Madya Maha Vidyalaya category.

In 2009 they celebrated the 75th Anniversary by inviting Sashindra Rajapaksha, The chief Minister of Uva Province and Dilan Perera, Minister of Foreign Affairs. They organized an arms giving for more than 75 monks and a “Wess Ceremony” for 43 students. They also launched their school web page during this time.

A lot has changed over the years. At present there are more than 800 students getting quality education from nearly 65 teachers. The principal Mr.r.m.weerasekara’s handles all where education is concerned.

A group of students of Maliththa M.M.V. got involved with another ten schools of the District, for a “Landslide Research Programme” which organized by the Ministry of Education and GIZ Organization. This is a project based programme which is included in the new education system. They make regular visits to Kahagalla Estate near Haputhale, to investigate reasons for the landslides which has been occurring in the area and keep submitting reports to GIZ. This investigation programme helps to develop their skills as well as the standard of their education.

Comparing with the leading schools in the town, village school principals and teachers they strive themselves to bring good results to the school as they receive only the remaining admission. This happens after qualified students leave the school in search of better education. During such situations, the results which the village schools get are quite satisfactory whilst comparing with other the leading schools.

Maliththa M.M.V. enjoys 75% results in G.C.E.(O/L) and more than 71% at G.C.E.(A/L) examinations. In 2011 Anil Upananda got 1’A and 2’B with the Z score of 1.56 in the Commerce stream. As the school has been selected as a secondary school, the Advanced Level Science steam will be opened this year.

Sports is the other area that Maliththians have done well. The best athlete of Uva province R.m.sachini Madushika is a legend of the school. V.M. Nuwan Chaminda created the Uva Province record in Javelin Throw and was selected to the National Pool in 2011. Deepika Rathnamalee, presently in the Air force pool is an old girl of Maliththa M.M.V. She brought in three gold medals in the All Island School Athletics Meet in 2009.

Not only in sports but also they have done well in the aesthetic field as well. In Eastern Music and Dancing competitions, students of Maliththa M.M.V. have always brought in pro- vincial victories to the school. They took the third place at the All Island competition in School Music and Drama Competitions in 2010.

This year the school administrators are planning to build a nearby bus halt under the “Mother Sri Lanka” Project.

The present principal stated that the Provincial Education Director Mr. Piyadasa Rathnayake, Divisional Education Director Mr. Ananda Godakanda and the Zonal Education Director Mr. M.r.ramanayake are the pillars behind the development of the school. He personally thanked them for their great support.
