Sri Rahula Maha Vidyalaya is an illustrious school in the Badulla district. It is situated in Mailagastenna. Their primary aim is to provide education to students who come from the surrounding villages.

At first It was established as a primary village school as Sri Gnanodaya Buddhist Vidyalaya at the premises of Sri Gnanodhaya Buddhist Centre in 1951. Initially the school had 33 students and two teachers. The first principal was Mr. L. P. Mahindarathna. In 1962 the school was shifted to the present premises. In 1963 the s chool was named Badulla Mailagasthanna Vidyalaya.

In 1973 the first batch of student sat for their G.C.E.(O/L) Examination. Gradually the education and the infrastructure developed and the school was named Badulla Sri Rahula Vidyalaya. In 1976 the school was placed under 1C category and earned Maha Vidyalaya status.

As the school is situated very close to Badulla town, most of the village children seek admissions for leading schools. They face a big challenge in the enrollment of students in recent years. Mr. R. M. Ariyapala is the present principal. He is an old student of the same school and has devoted himself to bring the standard of the school to the level of the schools in the town.

Sri Rahula M. V. has shown reasonable success in the academic field. Annually they obtain a couple of good results in the Grade 5 scholarship examination. G.C.E. (O/L) and G.C.E (A/L) too bring in more than 50% results. They can be satisfied with the number of students they have.

The vision of the school is “To produce a future generation rich in wisdom and virtue”

The school took second place as the “School with a Pleasant Environment”. They are involved in “Global School Partnership Programme” conducted by the British Council. “The Hollins Technology College of UK is their partner school. The head of the school, Miss Hayley Nunley visited Sri Rahula M. V. during June, 2011 and the school coordinator of Rahula M. V. Mrs W. M. H. N Leelaratne visited UK in November,2011. As a whole this project has paved the way for the students in Rahula M.V to improve the standard of English.

The students of Rahula M. V. have shown their colours in extracurricular activities as well. They are very good in sports. In 2007/2008 some of the girls of Sri Rahula M.V. were selected to play for the National Girls Football team. The school volleyball team became the DSI Mini Volleyball Women’s champions in 2007. Mohammed Faizal and R. A. P. Wasana Udayakumari are two talented athletes who were placed first in 400m and Triple Jump in the Province and took part at the All Island School Athletics Meet in 2011.
