-

The Kandy Society of Medicine (KSM) is holding its 64th annual academic sessions next Thursday (Feb. 9) with the position of the chief guest symbolically reserved for the late Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

The sessions will have an introduction of the late Foreign Minister by the President of the Society Prof. Chandrika Jayasinghe, followed by a replay of a speech delivered by Mr. Kadirgamar at the 15th National Congress of Chartered Accountants on 2 December, 1994 with a recorded narration by Prof. S.N. Arseculeratne PHD (Oxford) Emeritus Professor of Microbiology.

KSM President Prof. Chandrika Jayasinghe explaining the decision behind the Society's unprecedented move to have a vacant seat for the Chief Guest said their members wanted to honour someone who had done so much for Sri Lanka but was not present to enjoy the benefits of peace that the people now enjoyed following the end of terrorism.

"He played a vital role", she said "and we want to show our appreciation even six years after his assassination".

Prof. Jayasinghe added that the subject of his speech to the Chartered Accountants on "Professional Ethics" was also very relevant today

The Guest of Honour at these sessions will be Prof. Sarath Edirisinghe, former Professor in Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

The KSM Oration 2012 will be delivered by Prof. W.M. Tilakaratne, Professor of Oral Pathology at the University of Peradeniya on the subject "Oral Cancer and pre cancer, novel markers in malignant transformation and prognosis".

The Kandy Society of Medicine (KSM) was formed in 1964.

The sessions are to be held at the Plant Genetic Resource Centre at Gannoruwa.
