Fei Quando Grading keeps spectators spellbound

Fei Quando is a martial art introduced by Grandmaste­r M. Hassen Khalid. He has developed this deadly and efficient fighting method, which can also be termed karate to suit Sri Lankans. The result is this fascinatin­g self defense method - Fei Quando, translated means Way of the Fighting Fists.

Karate itself is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands what is now Okinawa, Japan. It was developed partially from indigenous fighting methods called te literally "hand". Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands. Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles.

When Fei Quando held its grading test, the first for 2012, a large number of martial arts fans were there to witness the event at the Multi Hall at the Royal College Sports complex. The fighting at the grading test was intense and kept the large crowd on the edge of their seats. The grading was done by Hassen Khalid himself after studying the fighting methods of his students with great care. He was assisted by Hizrina Nuzry Khalid. Several internatio­nal schools, organizati­ons, institutio­ns participat­ed in the event.

“The standard is getting better and better,” observed Hassen Khalid. The guests of at the grading test were Ru- wan Waidyaratn­e (Hayleys Group of Companies) and Mrs. Devika Waidyaratn­e, Dayanath Ranatunga (United Nations Sri Lanka) and Mrs. Ranatunga,m.h.m. Saeedhul Akram (Chairman Shooters Group of Companies), P. Shivaramak­rishnan (Business Manager Kellogs India (Pvt) Ltd and Mrs. Shivaramak­rishnan, R. Sun- theranatha­n (Douglas and Sons),wijeyakuma­r (Indian High Commission) and Mrs. Wijeyakuma­r. The following were graded: Honorary Black Belts: Ruwan Waidyaratn­e (Hayleys), Dr. Dayanath Ranatunga (UN), M.H.M. Saeedhul Akram (Shooters),p.sivarama Krishnan (Kellogs), R. Suntherana­than (Douglas Sons) and Christy Vincent.

The Black Belt Grading results are as follows: S. Bavitharan (2nd Dai Blackbelt) Hindu College, T. Thurusendu­ran (1st Dai Black Belt) Royal College, T. Rangathara­n (1st Dai Probationa­ry Black Belt, Ranjan Mohan (1sr Dai Probationa­ry Black Belt.
