Big demand to join Balangoda Sri Buddha Jayanthy MMV

-

A lot of parents want their children admitted to Balangoda Sri Buddha Jayanthy Madya Maha Vidyalaya in the Balangoda Zone. This is mainly due to the extraordinary achievements that students of this school have achieved in public examinations. Annually they receive more than thousand applications for Grade One as well as other grades. The administrators put a great deal of effort to choose students to give admissions.

During the period when this school was a Missionary school, some Buddhist monks and some villagers noticed the necessity of a Buddhist school for the Buddhist students to preserve the culture of the nation. As a result, in 1952 the school was established at the Kumburugoda Sangika Maha Sudharmarama temple, as Sri Buddha Jayanthy Buddhist Vidyalaya, a small village school with 39 students and 4 teachers.the first principal was Mr. L. A. P. Chandrasekara.

In fifteen years, the school managed to reach the peak as one of the largest schools in the zone in 1967 in their new premises. Though the school has established as a mixed school, in 1977as a request of parents in the Balangoda Zone, it was converted to a girls’ school but it did not long. The Ministry of Education converted the school into a mixed school. Since then a rapid development has taken place in both academic and non-academic fields.

Presently there are over 3000 students on roll receiving an all-round education from a qualified batch of teachers. The present principal is Mr. W. D. Chandra Priya who was awarded the prize for the best principal of the zone in 1996. He was first student from the school to enter university from Balangoda Vidyaloka M.V.

Grade five scholarship examinations bring a great deal of success with more than 40 passes annually. This year the school gained 42 passes.

G.C.E. (O/L) brings pride to the school, showing extraordinary achievement, where more than 80% qualify for the Advanced Level.

Also Sri Buddha Jayanthy students have produced excellent results in G.C.E.(A/L) with the help of capable graduate tutors. In 2009 Nalin Indika gained 3 A’s in the Maths Stream and was placed 2nd in the Ratnapura District. Annually the administrators of this school organize Seminars and workshops to improve their academic skills.

Sri Buddha Jayanthy M.M.V. has gained a reputation for their extra-curricular activities. As the education level of the school progresses, too sports talents too have increased.

Their success is not only in sports but in aesthetics activities too. The school dancing group won second place in 2010 and took first place in 2011 at the All Island Inter School Dancing Competition. The Eastern Music Group took first and second places respectively in All Island contests since 2009.

The pre s e n t principal Mr. W. D. Chandra Priya stated: “Parents of the area are very keen to enter their children to Balangoda Sri Buddha Jayanthy M. M. V. The reason for this is the quality of education we provide and the results we produce. However we do have some set backs in order to give them the opportunity to join us. The school buildings and the parapet walls are not maintained properly and lots of damages are seen in the infrastructure. They need immediate attention. The authorities concerned should take immediate care to assist the students and parents.”
