Melizen House the undisputed champs

Melizen House emerged champions at the 80th annual inter-house sports meet of St. Joseph’s College Colombo held at the school ground in Darley Road last Friday ( 3). The victorious Melizen house accumulate­d 336.5 points to outsmart the rest while their athletes were involved in sweeping the championsh­ips at seven different age categories out of eight.

After an intense battle the second place was clinched by Coudert House who bettered over Marque House by six- and- a- half points. Runner-up Coudert House collected 263 points while Marque House was placed third with 256.5 points. Bonjean House occupied the rear with 209 points.

Though sportsmen of Melizen House were victorious in many events, Naveen Muthuarach­chi of Coudert house was the cynosure of all eyes. Naveen who competed in the Under-17 age category emerged as the champion of the age group and also won two main awards. He was adjudged the Senior Champion Athlete as well as the Best Performer in the senior track events. Naveen went on to clock 11.1 in the 100m sprint event creating a new school meet record.

Four sportsmen shared the Under20 age category championsh­ip. Melizen’s Jason Melder and Yashan Samarasing­he were joined by Crishmal Fernando of Marque and Dilip Rehan of Bonjean in the feat. The Under-18 champion was Craig Alles of Melizen House while at the start of the day, Naveen Muthuarach­chi of Coudert won the Under-17 championsh­ip.

Shehan Moses of Marque claimed the Under- 16 championsh­ip while Kevin Fernando of Melizen clinched the Under15 ch a m p i o n s h i p. Surendra Jayawickre­ma of Coudert, Chris Jayasinghe of Bonjean and Jehan Daniel of Melizen shared the Under-14 title. The Under-13 title was won by Abdul Hisham of Melizen while Shaveen Rodrigo of Melizen clinched the Under-12 championsh­ip.

The senior championsh­ip was won by Melizen while Bonjean annexed the junior championsh­ip. Coudert House won the senior relay race while the junior relay race was won by Bonjean House. Veteran journalist Neil Wijeratne graced the occasion as the chief guest.
