- By M. Shamil Amit

Anuk Fernando came to the rescue of St. Sebastian’s on day two of their 62nd Battle of the Gold’s encounter against traditional rivals Prince of Wales played at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa.

The morning session of play saw Anuk who was unbeaten on nine making an unbeaten 80 helping Sebs who ended day one on 104 for 6 go into lunch with their heads high with a score of 252 for 8.

Anuk’s knock which came off 155 balls comprised five boundaries and a six and he was involved in valuable partnerships for the seventh and eighth wickets.

With Nishamal Fernando he was associated in 67 runs stand and followed with a 72 runs partnership for the eighth wicket with Sachintha Fonseka who was the next top scorer who made 37.

The opening days play saw Prince of Wales taking first lease of the wicket making a score of 161 with skipper Tharindu Dilshan and Ashen Mendis putting on a 78 runs stand for the third wicket.

But Prince of Wales stuck back as they made their opponents dig deep for their runs and had them in a spot of bother when play ended, but failed to keep up that momentum when play began on day two.

The scale of the match is in favour of a draw as there is only two sessions of play left and the two sides having to take the crease once each during those sessions.
