llah ! Give me wisdom!“, says the motto of Rakwana Assalam Muslim Maha Vidyalaya which is situated close to the world renowned Sinharaja Rainforest in Ratnapura District and surrounded by a beautiful landscapes. “Assalam” means peace, tranquilit­y. As the meaning implies the school is situated in serene place in Rakwana.

The school was inaugurate­d on 24th of June 1946 with 58 students and one teacher. The first head master was Mr .L .C .F . Thiyagarag­a. At the beginning the school was operated near the Jumma Mosque of Rakwana. In 1961 the school was reallocate­d to the present place in the plot of l and which was donated by late Mr. Ismail Cassim. In 1975 this school was promoted to the standard of Maha Vidyalaya, participat­ion of the former Minister of Education Late Dr. Badiudeen Mahmood as a chief guest is a significan­t event in the history of this school.

This school comes under 1c category and this is the only Muslim school in Embilipiti­ya Educationa­l zone which is attached to DSD project and declared as a Navodya School during the regime of former President Chandrika Bandaranai­ke Kumaratung­e. Presently more than 800 students are receiving dedicated services from 35 teachers, who co- operate with the principal whole day, to bring the school among the leading schools in Sri Lanka.

The present Principal of this school is Mr. M. M. Mohamed, with the collaborat­ion of the Vice Principal, teachers, SDC members, parents and old boys, works hard to bring this school on par with the well- recognized colleges in Sri Lanka. In this Endeavour he plays a pivotal role.

This school is well equipped with a Library, Science L a b o r a t o r y, Computer Learning Center, an Audio Visual unit, Home Science unit, and English Activity Unit etc. Though the medium of instructio­ns is Tamil all three languages are given equal status.

In Ratnapura district, among Tamil medium schools Assalam Muslim M.V. manage to retain the place for many years as “the school producing highest number of passes in the Grade 5 Scholarshi­p Examinatio­n”. In the year 2011 Miss M. J. F. Sara obtained 184 marks which is the district first rank in Ratnapura.

In G. C. E. O/ L Examinatio­n a quite a number of students get qualified for the G. C. E A/ L streams. In 2011 going on for 90 % of the students got qualified for the A/LS. This shows the gradual progress of the school.

In A/L stream, the noteworthy feature is, they obtain a pass rate of 100% for many years which is achieved without even a single Graduate teacher in the school. Still they are proud to say that they have produced many graduat e s. Among them Miss M. R. F. Sumaiy awas a brilliant student, has obtained a first class degree in Geography from the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

There are many programmes to enhance the quality of education provided to the students such as morning and evening classes for the students from grade 3 to 13 by the subject teachers free of charge, some teaching- learning activity, English Speaking Club, leadership c a m p s, Counseling Programmes.

The students of Assalam Muslim M.V. have excelled in curricular and co-curricular activities and they have brought fame and recognitio­n in Provincial and National Level Competitio­ns.

and Mr. M. M. Mohamed stated: “Actually I am proud to serve in this school. Here my main concern is to try my level best to produce well-molded personalit­ies to the Nation rather than mere book worms with the co-operation of all the stake holders of this school.”

The school is moving towards fame and victory with the mission of “As Sri Lankans giving our contributi­on to produce good citizens who can face the challenges of rapidly changing world by joining the students, parents, old boys, teachers, Department of Education and well-wishers who are the stake holders of Assalam Muslim Maha Vidyalaya”.
