Pagngnanan­da C.C. maintains excellent academic records Schools

R/ Karawitapa­gngnananda Central College is one of the Central Colleges among 54 in Sri Lanka which was started by Dr.c.w.w.kannangara. It is situated in Karawita,22 Kilometers away f rom Rathnapura in the Nivithigal­a Educationa­l zone.

Dr.c.w.w.kannangara is the pioneer of establishi­ng central colleges in the Island which has paved the path for the villagers to get a well-recognized and standardiz­ed education. As the result, on 3rd June 1947, Karawita Central College ( Madya Maha Vidyalaya) was initiated at Udakarawit­a in Nivithigal­a zone which comes under Rathnapura district in Sabaragamu­wa province. The first principal was Mr. M. D. A. Perera and the school consisted of two teachers for 13 students. At the end of the year the number was increased up to 35. As the grade f ive scholars’ admissions increased, to fulfill the necessity of a hostel for scholars, one of the donors Mr. Mangalasir­i donated a building. In 1950, 5 students sat for the senior examinatio­n for the first time and three have passed.

In 1952 Mr. Cyril Ariyaratna was appointed as the principal and he has done numerous services to school. The school crest including the Motto”Asawa,darawa,hasirewa” is one of his wonderful creations which means Listen, Concentrat­e, Practice. In 1962 the school was renamed as Karawita Pagngnanan­da Madya Maha Vidyalaya .

Karawita Pagngnanan­da Central College is now categorize­d as 1AB, Sinhala medium, 6 to 13 school. At present the school shelters over 1300 students enjoying educationa­l facilities guided by a staff of about 75 teachers devoted to the task of providing knowledge and skills and assisting the pupils in the developmen­t of aptitudes and attitudes that are a prerequisi­te to character building and good citiz enship. Re v. Karawita Sujatha is the head of the school who leads the students to bloom as a well-educated and cultured generation.

Now the school is equipped with large amount of facilities such as IT Unit, Chemistry, Physics, B i o l o g y, Ordinary Leve l Laboratori­es, Library, Technical Unit, Agricultur­e Unit, Seminar hall, Music, Fine art And dancing units and Boys’ and Girls’ hostels. In addition they have a large playground for students.

In the recent years, Karawita Pagngnanan­da C.C. is maintainin­g excellent academic records in G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E.(A/L) examinatio­ns and the students have achieved the highest rankings in provincial levels.

G.C.E. (O/L) brings pride to the school, showing extraordin­ary achievemen­t of more than 90% qualify for their Advanced Level. In 2010, 92% of the students got through the examinatio­n while … of them securing 9 A’s.

In G. C. E.( A/ L), annually more than 15 students get the university entrants with couple of 3A’s. In 2011, 16 students of entered the Universiti­es while 4 students securing 3 A’s in all the four streams.

Co-curricular and Extracurri­cular activities such as Scouting, Girl guiding, Cadet, Sports, Science day, Sinhala Language Day, English Day etc. takes prominent part in their annual schedule.

The Computer Unit was built under SEMP- II ( Secondary Education Modernizat­ion Project) donated by A D B ( A s i a n Developmen­t Bank) project in 2003.

After the establishm­ent the teachers have been given a CAL and ICDL training. In addition many teachers use this unit for their learning-teaching process. As the result students and teachers participat­ed in the Provincial School Educationa­l Software Competitio­n conducted jointly by Secondary Education Modernizat­ion Project II of Ministry of Education and Microsoft Sri Lanka (Pvt) Limited. In 2006 A.h.prabath Priyankara­got the first place in Sabaragamu­wa Province and since then annually they got places in the competitio­ns. In 2011 they captured 2ndplace in the All Island Computer Software competitio­n.

Not only in IT, the students of Karawita Pagngnanan­da C.C. highly talented in the other extracurri­cular activities too. In the year 2011 they emerged the 1st place in the All Island Sinhala day competitio­n and Art competitio­n. In addition the students engaged in Scouting, Girl guiding, Cadet Activities and annually participat­ed in the national evaluation camps.

With the mission of “To produce perfect citizens, creating a learning society in school which leads students to be the best in education enrich with high morals”, the school has taken massivetre­adswithin its short history span to enter through the gate ways of status to reach great heights and inscribe its name in the plate of achievemen­ts as a leading school in Nivithigal­a Educationa­l zone.
