Scrabble very popular at Hejaaz

Hejaaz Internatio­nal School, Mount Lavinia is an English medium school which promotes academic and extra curricular activities to enhance the lives of the students in its care.

In order to develop the students’ literature level Hejaaz Internatio­nal School is promoting the board game of scrabble.

Scrabble, regarded as a popular mind sport today has become very popular at Hejaaz Internatio­nal School, since it was introduced in 2004. Under the guidance and expertise of veteran scrabble coach Laxman Cooray, the youngsters of Hejaaz Internatio­nal School are climbing the ladder of success day after day.

Today they have become a force to reckon with in the Sri Lankan InterSchoo­ls Scrabble Championsh­ip.

Currently the Hejaaz Internatio­nal School team is placed among the top ten of the Division ‘A’ tournament circuit and are focusing heavily on winning the title in this year’s edition of the schools tournament. According to the teacher-incharge, Romaine Navaratne, the tol- erant and nurturing eight years gone by are reaping the harvest.

“Our scrabble players took part in several schools competitio­ns and have fared well. In 2011 our Under-15 t eam won t he Sch o o l s Championsh­ip hosted by Lyceum Nugegoda. Ridwan Bary was adjudged the most outstandin­g player of the tournament.

This gives us great promise that we can certainly achieve more in the future,” said Navaratne.

The management of Hejaaz Internatio­nal School supports its scrabble players to the fullest and encourages them to be more prominent in the field. To add more pleasure to this effort the players follow extracurri­cular activities enthusiast­ically.

More importantl­y constant practice over the years has brought the boys to a standard that enables them to go out eagerly and compete with other schools in the arena.
