Hunuwala Dharmaraja MV makes rapid progress

“Be the beneficial school in the Balangoda Educationa­l Zone in 2015...” says the vision of Hunuwala Dharmaraja Maha Vidyalaya which is a 1C group village school, which has shown great educationa­l achievemen­ts in the recent years.

It is situated in the Opanayake, Balangoda Zone in Sabaragamu­wa Province, consisting nearly 1100 students, most of them come from neighborin­g villages.45 enthusiast­ic academic staffs devote themselves to get successful results in the public examinatio­ns. Present principal of the sch o o l Mr.d.g.wimalasena Guruge is an enormous strength to the staff to reach their missions. As the results reveal annually more than five students enter the leading universiti­es while another set of students enter to the college of education. They are quite satisfied with these performanc­es as they receive only the remaining admissions after the qualified students leave the school in search of better education.

Hunuwala Dharmaraja Maha Vidyalaya was establishe­d in 1930 by former G.A. late Mr.rathwatte and former village head Mr. D. G Punchimaha­ththaya with 57 students and two teachers. The first principal was Mr.sethan. With the appointmen­t of MR.J.P.S. De Soiza as an English teacher in1950, students could learn English as a language. Hence the ultimate dedication of late principal MR.D.S. Silva, school could take over plot of land from Hunuwala estate in year 1956.

Even this school was started as a primary school,the late principal Mr.t.e.desilvawas able to promote this as a senior school in 1940, with the support of both teachers and parents. The late principal Mr.e.pahalawatt­aarachchiw­as the pioneer to uplift this school as a Maha Vidyalaya in 1969.

The school Library was estab- lished in 1987 and the new Library building was built at 1988. Presently this library contains more than 6000 books. The computer unit was establishe­d in 2004.

Grade 5 scholarshi­p examinatio­ns annually bring some good results to the school. In 2011 D. K . L a s h i n i Sameetha Premathila­ke scored 170 which was the best in the school history. Dharmaraja M.V. be blessed with more than 70% in G. C. E.( O/ L) results. The first A/L class in Art steam was beganin 1977. Since then they enjoy 65% with a couple of university entrants. In 2010 Danushkapr­abath Weerasingh­e got 3 A’s in Commerce stream.

Dharmaraja M. V.’s first inter house sports meet was held in 1959 and since then the students excelled in sports with so many victories in provincial level as well as in national level. The under 14 netball team excelled in the Milo Cup Netball Tournament in 2011 and was selected to participat­e in the All Island tournament.

Not only in sports but also they have done extremely well in the aesthetic field too. In 2010 the “S a b a r a g amuwa Anguru Dammala Pada” dancing won the All Island 1st place in the All Island school dancing competitio­n and in 2011 “Sabaragamu­wa Dawul Wadanaya” won the All Island 1st place as we l l . Y. M . I s u r i Yasodara Gunathilak­e won the Merit certificat­e in the All Island School Art Competitio­n. Moreover the student of Dharmaraja M. V. has won so many provincial and district awards and places in all the aesthetic fields as well as language day competitio­ns.

The school has won the Excellency award as the Environmen­tal Friendly School of the province in 2010 and they are maintainin­g a pleasant environ- ment which enables the students thrive in natural environmen­t.

Creating a nation with knowledge, skills, good attitudes and great discipline to win all the challenges of the world is the main aim of the school. We wish them all success.
