The Primary Inter House Sports Meet of S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela took place on March 16 at the college grounds amidst a large gathering of illustrious guests, parents and wellwishers.

The Chief Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Gehan Perera who were both received at the doorway to the college by the headmaster L.A.M. Chandrasekera. They were directed by the Primary School Kandyan dancing troop to the main pavilion.

The atmosphere was very colourful as the entire area was decorated by the stu- dents of the Primary School who turned out smartly dressed in their particular house colours. Some of the highlights during the Primary School Sports Meet were the two drill displays presented by the Grade two and three students. The Grade four students staged a separate drill display. The stunning gymnastics display performed by the Grade Five students had the audience spell bound.

The most breathtaking moment was the jumps through the rings of fire by these students. These students had been trained by the physical instructors of the Diyatalawa Military Academy. Another prominent presentation was the junior band show, a mix of both western and eastern music and dancing which kept the audience fascinated. Overall the sports meet was well organized. The events reflected the capabilities and endeavours of the Primary Staff through the children.

The main point toward of a well organised Sports Meet for the Primary School is to enable all the Primary students to participate at least in one event which was instigated three years ago by the present headmaster L.A.M. Chandrasekera, as it seemed essential to get the students engaged in sports at a very young age and also ‘get a feel’ of what it is like to get involved in a sports meet. Since then this has become an annual event.

The Chief Guest in his speech acclaimed the staff and students for organising such a well-planned colourful event which carried him down memory lane 40 years back. Also he was of the opinion that the overall disciplines of the students were excellent.
