Spotlight on young talent

A rare opportunit­y to enjoy the talent and scintillat­ing sounds of teenagers rocking in the open air will awaits the young and old on March 31,2012 at the Bishop’s College Grounds, Colombo 03.

Parents, teachers and students will join hands to raise funds for Bishop’s College. The project has been mooted by the Parent-teacher Associatio­n and the energetic members of the school’s Interact Club have been entrusted with the task of organizing this project.

The open air concert will feature bands from six schools who will be performing and the three hour event will be supplement­ed by the pop band from Bishop’s College. The preliminar­y audition to select the final groups were held on March 3, 2012 at the main hall amidst an animated organizing committee and three judges entrusted with the task of picking the best.

The judging panel comprised Aruna Sirwardena, popular drummer of the 80’s of ‘Jetliners’ fame, Gayan Perera the young leader of the group ‘Daddy’ and the young singing sensation Umariya Sinhawansa.

‘Audacity’ of Ladies College the only ‘girl group’ to perform and qualify were “mind blowing” according to judge Gayan, whilst the other six ‘boy groups’ were quite brilliant in their own way.

There was nothing ‘Accidental’ from S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia even though they were grouped together by acci- dent judge Aruna commented that the group “were brilliant.”

The two groups representi­ng St. Peter’s College, an instrument­al band ‘Fusion Ex’ and the funky rock ‘Slash’ qualified for the slots. The only mixed group - ‘Flawless’ from Gateway College got the nod as well and are sure to live up to their name. ‘Amaranth’ of Wesley College and ‘Extinct’ of D.S. Senanayake College completed the list of the seven most sensationa­l groups to perform at the openair event on March 31.

The print media sponsors for the event are the Sunday Times and the Daily Mirror concert tickets are priced at Rs. 500 and are available at Bishop’s College, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.
