Schools Delwala MV has risen to the top through sheer grit and hard work

-

Delwala Maha Vidyalaya is situated in the Rathnapura District of Sab a r a gamuwa Province and it belongs to the Nivithigala Educational Zone. Delwala village is the largest GS Division in the Nivithigala Secretarial division. The population in this village is more than 6500. This village is covered by a range of mountains.

Mr. G.P.D.DE Silva was the founder of the school. He contributed to establish a small village school with eleven students and two teachers in a temporary building at the village temple. On October 1, 1934 the school was shifted to the present premises. Later the school was registered and Mr. Francis was assigned to be its first principal. In 1936 they were able to put up a permanent building. During that period the principal was Mr. Jayasekara.

During the Second World War the school held its sessions until 3.30p. m. Only one teacher taught all the subjects for each class and rapidly they were able to reach up to G. C. E. ( O/ L) classes. In 1944 two students got through the O/ L Examination. Delwala Vidyalaya earned the Maha Vidyalaya Status in 1972. Gradually the school developed not only in education but also in every aspect. Mr. Piyadasa Jayasinghe Arachchi helped a lot in the construction of a school playground. The school computer unit was established under SEMP- II project in 2007.

A lot has improved over the years and today there are more than 500 students getting quality education from nearly 30 teachers, among them Mrs. M. Chithra Manike, a dedicated teacher won the “Prathibha Prabhapranama” President’s Award as the best teacher in the Zone. The principal Mr. O. Dammika Senadeera’ has also won the “Prathibha Prabhapranama” President’s Award as the Best Principal in the Zone in 2011.

The Primary section of the school is presently doing well and has brought reasonable success in Grade 5 scholarship examinations in the Nivithigala Zone. In 2011 examination, H. G. Gayana Sewwandhi brought credit to the school by getting 153 marks.

G. C. E.( O/ L) examination has brought the success rate of 65% to 70% to the school. Each year, the school has improved in G. C. E. (A/L) results and the Arts stream always brings in 60% results. The school is indeed proud of the achievement by Nishani Rasanjali who got 2 A’s and 1B in his G.C.E.(A/L) 2011.

Since the establishment of the IT Unit the students and teachers have performed well at ICT competitions. In 2010 Suranji Malkanthi emerged first in the province and Udeshika Sandamali was placed fourth in the Provincial Software Competition. In 2011 Suranji Malkanthi secured the same place with a great deal of enthusiasm. The teacher in-charge of school ICT unit too won the first place in the same competition organized for teachers.

Delwela M.V. students are skilled at not only in their studies. They are extra ordinary in extracurricular activities too. The students have done well in all extracurricular activities. They have captured to a greater extent provincial and national level successes to their college. Aesthetic unit is the other successful section in the school which has brought exceptional results to the school.

Starting off as a feeble village school and attaining the peak in all academic and non-academic fields is not an easy task. The devotion of the teachers, proper management of the principal, and endeavor of the students and the support of the parents and old students association, as well as school development council has brought the school up to this level. This will no doubt help the school to reach the peak in the near future.
