Huge opportunity for Sri Lankans to learn Korean language free of charge at Orient Academy

-

Orient Academy was appointed as the sole official institute to run Korean language training programmes in Sri Lanka by state run King Sejong Institute, Korea after signing an MOU in Colombo last week. Mr. S. P. Byun was appointed as the Principal of Sri Lanka for King Sejong Institute and this MOU was signed by Mr. Byun and Mr. Kapila Giragama, Chief Operating Officer of Orient Academy.

Under this MOU, Sri Lankans who are seeking employment in Korea will be able to learn Korean language free of charge at Orient Academy and after a comprehensive training of six months, the participants are given a recognized certificate from Korea. All the lectures are conducted by Korean lecturers with Sinhala translations. To start off the project, three Korean nationals have already arrived in the country.

After signing this MOU, King Sejong prin- cipal added that there are 30000 Sri Lankans who are working in Korea and annually 7000 new Sri Lankan employees are joining. The first and foremost qualification to get into Korea is getting through the proficiency examination which is compulsory, so that this initiative will help immensely for these job hunters. In addition to Sri Lanka, there is a huge demand for Korean jobs from other countries as well. After understanding this demand, the government of Korea decided to set up King Sejong institute under their cultural department all across the world in order to teach Korean Language and they have already reached out to 40 countries including major European countries.

Further, he mentioned that negotiations are in progress with the Minister of Education in order to standardize illegal and unprofessional Korean teaching programmes in Sri Lanka in the future since some Sri Lankan Korean teachers are not aware of the correct language use. He also mentioned that in the future students who are studying at Orient Academy will get a chance to go to Korea for further studies under the cultural exchange programme which is now being planned.

COO, Orient Academy, Mr. Giragama also mentioned that this initiative will help Sri Lankan Government to reach its foreign employment targets and overall developmental goals in Mahinda Chinthana
