Chirath : Carey’s pride in cricket

A l l - rounder Ch ira th Mapatuna of Carey College is going great guns in cricket. Chirath has been a leading wicket- taker for Carey during the past three first XI seasons he played for the school team. As a left- arm leg- spinner Chirath has captured over 250 wickets for Carey which includes 100 wickets last season. Chirath captured 100 wickets in a season after a long lapse of 30 years at Carey College. Among his feats include a match-bag of 13 wickets for 120 runs against Dhar maloka Vidya l aya Kelaniya, which brings his wicket tally to 75 off 13 matches. As a left handed batsman Chirath has scored 252 runs. Last season he captured 105 wickets from 15 matches, including best match figures of 11 for 132 against St. Anthony’s College Wattala. As a batsman Chirath scored over 400 runs in 14 games.

His continuous successes during past three seasons have helped Chirath achieve many achievemen­ts. Two years ago he was selected for the Sri Lanka Under-17 cricket squad and was a member of the national Under-17 spin squad. He has been included in the Under- 19 national spin squad from last season and he continues to remain in the squad as a leading spinner. Chirath has gained ample experience by playing for district and provincial teams in all age categories since he first started playing cricket with the Under-13 team. Since 2009 Chirath has been representi­ng Wennappuwa Sports Club as an all-rounder in the Sri Lanka Cricket Under-23 Inter-club tournament. He has played for the Under-13, 15, 17 and 19 teams of Carey and is a third year coloursman in the first XI team. He also has led the Under-15, 17 and 19 teams while being awarded the most outstandin­g cricketer twice, in 2011 and 2012, in the history of Carey College.
