Sri Lanka has not been left out of this regional tourism action. We welcomed the arrival of the 800,000th tourist in December 2011 which is a significant 33.1% increase over 2011 tourist arrivals of 654,476. According to the 5- year strategic development plan for the tourism sector by Sri Lankan tourism authority, our country targets to attract US$ 3 billion worth of Foreign Direct investment ( FDI) in tourism infrastructure development including developing world class hotels and resorts. We can expect the foreign exchange earnings from tourism to increase 5 folds from US$ 500 million now to US$ 2.75 billion by the year 2016. 400,000 new tourism related jobs will also be created by 2016!
