Open University Malaysia is scheduled to deliver a MSC Nursing Degree for the first time in Sri Lanka. This would be delivered at the International Institute of Health Sciences (Iihs-www.iihsciences. com), the pioneer in the healthcare education in Sri Lanka. This Masters Degree is offered in affiliation with the Open University of Malaysia and under the joint national project between International Institute of Health Sciences, Open University of Malaysia and Public Services United Nurses Union of Sri Lanka.
Nursing is a globally recognized profession which has a great demand internationally and currently it is the number 01 in terms of demand. Although the nursing professionals in our healthcare industry are doing an excellent job, trying to maintain international standards in the local arena, the lack of opportunities for continuous nursing education has been an obstacle for them. Our nurses acquire their discerning skills with a minimum of resources, but they have played a major role in raising the Health care system of Sri Lanka to being one of the best in the South East Asian region. However, the lack of opportunities for nurses to expand their knowledge and to have continuous education has fettered their careers, up to a certain extent.
This joint national project was conceptualized to overcome this obstacle which was hindering the development of the Sri Lankan healthcare system. Under this project IIHS launched several internationally recognized educational programmes together with the Open University of Malaysia and the 01st step was the Bachelor (Hons) Nursing Science Degree which is a 02 year part time top-up degree, which enabled the 03 year Diploma holding nurses to upgrade their qualification to a BSC level, enhancing the career progression. Another objective of these programmes is to facilitate the local nurse’s entry in to the international healthcare facilities, hence improving the image of Sri Lanka as a provider of caring, confident and fully competent nursing professionals.
The second step of this project is the commencement of the Master of Nursing Degree which is also offered in affiliation with the Open University Malaysia. This is also a 02 year part time Masters Degree mainly focusing on developing management skills of future nursing leaders. The candidates to be eligible for this Master’s should have a Bachelors degree in nursing while working experience is not an essential criterion. The students have to attend lectures only two days per month and those two days would in addition be weekends, thus enabling the students to balance both their profession and their studies.
The major objectives of this Nursing Masters programme is to assist learners to develop professionally, to respond effectively to the challenges within healthcare as nursing leaders, to function as professional nursing leaders who are equipped to respond to increasingly complex healthcare environments, to create effective and efficient nursing leaders who can be competent role models who match international standards, and also to contribute to the development of the nursing profession by upgrading their nursing leadership, research and professional skills. The degree has been designed in such a way as to enable the students to achieve all the mentioned objectives upon completion of the programme.
The major study components covered during the course of study are as follows; the first year covers 06 major modules: Clinical Decision Making, Healthcare Management, Hospital Administration, Nursing Models & Development, Research Methodology and Trends & Issues in Nursing. The second year covers another 06 modules namely, Advanced Nursing Leadership & Management, Nursing Research Proposal, Reflection in Nursing, Research Project Paper, Statistical Analysis and Trans- cultural in Nursing. Upon completion of this nursing master’s degree, there would be plenty of potential for job opportunities such as becoming Unit in- charge, Nursing researcher, University nursing lecturer, Health/ Hospital administrator, Public health policy maker or even a career climax of becoming a CEO of a hospital.
Madam Raijah A. Rahim, Deputy Dean- SONAHS of Open University Malaysia expressed her views that this venture would be a great opportunity for Sri Lankan Nurses to broaden their knowledge and skills and continuous education at a very affordable price. And she went on to explain about the long term relationship OUM has with IIHS in delivering Nursing degrees and she was certain of the quality and the standards maintained by IIHS in delivering international healthcare programs. She expressed their willingness for a long journey with IIHS to deliver specialized nursing courses and even Doctorate programmrs of Nursing in Sri Lanka. Speaking on behalf of the Public Services United Nurses Union of Sri Lanka, its President Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero commended about the valuable project of “Heda Nena Weduma” and the valuable help it provides to upgrade the profession of nursing in Sri Lanka to international standards by introducing internationally recognized Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees for Sri Lankan nurses. He further admired the contribution done by IIHS and Open University of Malaysia by providing quality education at an affordable rate for the nurses, for their continuous education up to the BSC and MSC levels.
“This is another value addition from IIHS for the health sector of Sri Lanka which has a very high demand locally and internationally. I have experienced that our nurses have good hearts, but the skills and the knowledge has to be uplifted to the international standards”, explained Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, Deputy Chairman of IIHS. He further added, “This is a proactive initiative by IIHS and I invite all Academic, Doctors, and Ministry Officials to support this national project and also I would take this opportunity to thank Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero and also to Madam Asoka of the Public Services United Nurses Union for the help they provided to open out opportunities for the Sri Lankan nurses.”
