Employable skill is a key element for youth employment : ILO

The Internatio­nal Labour Organizati­on (ILO) and the Miani Technical Institute of Batticaloa recently jointly provided the National Vocational Qualificat­ion (NVQ) to 55 young women and men in the Batticaloa District.

The annual certificat­e awarding ceremony for graduates was held recently with Donglin Li – Country Director of ILO Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives as the chief guest.

“The ILO is working towards decent employment for youth of the country and attainment of employable skills is the key element for youth employment and the decent work. I urge training providers to adapt their training programmes to provide quality training leading to decent employment opportunit­ies,” said Mr. Li in his address. His comments and details of the ceremony were sent in a media release by the ILO.

All the graduates were from resettled areas of the district and many of them were provided with residentia­l facilities in the institute to avoid difficulti­es of daily commuting, the statement said.

The initiative was funded through the ILO’S Empowering Conflict-affected Communitie­s Project financed under the Human Security Trust Fund (HSTF) of the United Nations.
