Replace rules with innovation, passion and drive : Kishu
Popular corporate personality Kishu Gomes made a forceful and examples-filled presentation at the monthly meeting of the Sunday Times Business Club (STBC) last week.
Mr Gomes, Ceo/managing Director of Chevron Lubricants Lanka Plc, spoke on the challenges facing young people and the 'will to succeed', citing many examples in a delivery that was enhanced both by strong external examples of the ‘will to succeed’ as well as his own experiences as an athlete, downthe-ladder corporate worker rising to corporate chief and leader in his chosen field.
A former President of the American Chamber of Commerce, Sri Lanka and also a former Senior Vice Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK - Sri Lanka Regional Branch, Mr Gomes raised issues about depleting resources and the challenges faced by the global corporate world to survive in such an environment.
He spoke on competition and the competitive spirit, in handling incompetent and disillusioned staff, and discussed at length the factors influencing the level of competition. In a presentation accompanied by interesting slides, he spoke on fast depleting and scarce resources, more people needing to share these resources, the escalating cost of living, and the waste of resources due to natural and man-made disasters.
Referring to an organizational perspective, he exhorted young people to replace organisation rules with innovation, ‘passion and drive’ to harness the best; use the ‘natural rhythm of life’ to bring people together through the ‘child in you -the adult’ theory; learn from other people, businesses and industries; treat ‘competition’ as an opportunity to improve and ‘competitors’ as enemies; differentiate performance for meaningful motivation and weed out ‘poor performers’to raise the organisational performance standard.
The club is hosted by the Taj Samudra Hotel, sponsored by Etisalat and co- sponsored by Hameedia.
