‘Jungle Adventures’, a concert by the students of the Elementary Section of Wycherley International School, was held recently at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. In keeping with the title of the concert, the young performers explored jungle life in the wilds of Africa, Asia, and South America through song, dance, mime, drama, and art.

The concept of thematic learning was introduced to the students of the Elementary Section of Wycherley International at the start of the academic year 2011/2012. Students learn about a selected theme through a variety of activities and programmes carried out throughout the academic year, including the Art Programme, the Library Programme, the Activity Day, and the annual Elementary Section concert. The theme chosen for 2011/2012 was ‘The Jungle’.

‘Jungle Adventures’ successfully showcased the aesthetic talents of the students, while exposing them to performing publicly, thereby encouraging creativity and instilling self-confidence at a young age. Against a backdrop of giant trees, shrubs and creepers, the ‘jungle’ came alive and 215 performers took to the stage as birds, deer, peacocks, leopards, bears, snakes and other colourful animals and explorers. Students as young as 2years old appeared on stage in keeping with Wycherley’s ethos of ensuring that every student in the Elementary Section participated in the concert.the highlight of the concert, for many, was Wycherley Nursery’s very own Tarzan and Jane.

Concerns over the concert were many. For the students, it was the bright lights and the eager, watchful eyes of the audience. For the teachers, not least was the concern that the students may not actually perform on the night, with the added worry that some performers would fall asleep during the show. All went well, however, on the night. The birds flew, the peacocks preened, the hunters were terrified, and Tarzan remembered his somersaults. Most important of all, the students enjoyed their ‘Jungle Adventures’.

Little uns of Carmel Montessori House of Children, Hendala had their “Singithi Avurudu Pola” recently. With an overwhelming support from the parents the school was transformed into a village atmosphere with theme shops (Kade), Selling Avurudu delicacy to the public. To grace the occasion, parish Priest Rev. Fr. Mahendra Goonethilaka was invited from St. Mary’s Church Nayakkanda.
