-

D.S. Senanayake College Colombo conducted their annual sports meet at their school ground at Wijerama Mawatha. Their primary sports meet was held in the morning session followed by their senior sports meet which took place in the afternoon. Thousands of students representing the four Houses, Shura, Weera, Shantha and Mettha took part in the sports meet which was keenly contested with great spectator participation. The principal D.M.D. Dissanayake speaking at the occasion stressed the importance of sports to the children.

“The importance of sports and games is being recognized increasingly in all schools today from both the educational and social point of view. Today to D.S. Senanayake we have allocated more funds with the help of Old Boys Association and School’s Development Society, and it has become an essential part of our curriculum. We are encouraging all the students to take part in some game or another, not only to win but to maintain physical fitness. Participation in games and sports invaluably ensures good health and fitness. Sports build up brotherhood, ability to take up defeat, co-operate with others. All study and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Sports instils a spirit of self-confidence, selfreliance, discipline, justice, fair play and patriotism. All of us are familiar with the maxim ‘Health is wealth’,” said Dissanayake during his speech. The chief guest at the ceremony was Bandula Gunawardane, the Minister of Education. - NA
