National elections at French Embassy in 2012
France held in 2012 both presidential and general elections, as it happens every five years since 2002. The voters have been called four times, twice for the presidential election, on the 23rd of April and on the 6th of June and twice for the general elections, on June 3rd and 17th. During these days the Embassy of France in Colombo has been turned into a polling station.
To be able to vote, a French citizen has to be registered on the electoral roll. In 2012, there were 259 people on the electoral register of the Embassy of France in Colombo. All of them are living in Sri Lanka or in the Maldives.

President of the Republic. The constitutional reform of July 23rd 2008 made it possible for them to elect 11 members of the National Assembly, out of 577.
For the first time in 2012, they elected these specific representatives to parliament, for whom 11 constituencies have been created. Each constituency must house a similar-sized population in order to respect the equality principle of the electoral code. French citizens living in Sri Lanka and the Maldives are part of the largest one as it includes the French communities scattered in most of Asian countries.
For the first time, French citizens abroad had the possibility to cast their vote by Internet for the general elections.
