UOM turns tables on Malays

University of Moratuwa turned the tables on Malay CC when they came from behind to post a 3-1 win over the former in their Pioneer Shield hockey fixture at the Padang recently. At half time both sides had scored a goal each.

In the 22nd minute of play, skipper and centre half H. Rizwie worked himself past the University of Moratuwa defenders and right inside Omerdeen put the finishing touches to make it 1-0 for the home team. But their lead was short lived when full back D.C. Amarakoon made no mistake and equalised with a penalty.

After the turn around, the undergradu­ates took the lead when centre half scored in the 45th minute and three minutes later, M.P. Attanayake added the third off a pass from centre forward D.A. Abeyratne to make it 3-1 and victory for the undergradu­ates.The game was refereed by Satish Kumar and Ajith Jayasena, while Damith Jayasena was the reserve umpire. their Colombo counter parts in their Pioneer Shield hockey fixture at Thurstan Road recently. At half time Moratuwa University held a 2-0 lead. In the 19th minute of play, right half G.M.S. Gajanayake opened the scoring to put Moratuwa one up and two minutes later centre forward H.H.B. Herath made it two nil.

After the turn around, Herath fired his second goal in the 35th minute to make it 3-0 and in the 39th minute right inside L. Ranasinghe scored the first goal for Colombo University (3-1). The final goal for the match was once again off the stick of Herath in the 59th minute. The game was controlled by the Jayasena brothers Damith and Ajith, while Maithripal­a was the third official. jitha Ekanayake equalised for the university.

After the change of ends, the university took the lead in the 39th minute when centre forward J.P. Arulrajah got his stick onto the ball. But two minutes later left inside Dammika Silva shot the equalizer for the CH and FC ‘B’ to make it a two all draw. The game was refereed by M. Vithanage and Suresh Kumar, while H.Mithrapala was the third umpire.
