Cutting Edge 2012- An Innovative state of the art IT & Business Solutions developed by IIT students
The Informatics Institute of Technology ( IIT) prides itself on nurturing students who are geared to take on the challenges of the modern working world from the time they set foot out into the real corporate environment.
Cutting edge is the showcase for all final year students studying Software Engineering and Information Systems with Business Management to display their final year projects usually in June. These projects are taken up during the final year of study and account for a percentage of the final marks for each student.
What is unique about this final year project is that it is entirely the student’s innovation. Two years of thorough academic study followed by an eye opening placement year moulds each student to be able to think out of the box, be creative, be innovative, and dare to be different.
During the ten years since the Institute introduced displaying of final year projects to the outside world , IIT has seen the astounding innovations and inventions that have gone on to make a mark in both the local and international arena. The Exhibition is not simply an internal concern but instead is open to the corporate world and in fact attracts key personnel from top end IT based Companies who are invariably the ultimate employers of the students. This allows for employers to assess the capability and talent of the students and offer career opportunities for them.
The judges who evaluate the projects for its excellence are experts from the fields of IT and Management and thus are unbiased whilst at the same time set a high level of expectation for the projects. These projects have to date offered innovative solutions for mobile applications, distributed systems, virtual reality, augmented reality , bio medical, telecommunication’s and the health industry.
Associate Professor Alfred Perera, Dean of IIT was enthusiastic in his praise for the student’s genius prominently displayed each year at the cutting edge exhibition. “By having to do their own research, come up with an innovative solution/product or service in Business and IT, the students receive exposure to all the relevant sectors. The standard expected from the projects is such that extensive research and hard work is necessary in order to receive high marks, gain recognition and possible job recruitment.” He said.
“Companies that are represented at the exhibition are very keen in employing those students who have shown promise. In fact some Companies actually offer and go on to implement the students’ innovative ideas, develop and market it within the Industry. These innovations are then protected by patents and other legal mechanisms” Further said Associate Professor Alfred Perera.
Each year three students are recognized for their innovativeness and uniqueness and awarded prizes in the two categories of Software Engineering and Information Systems with Business Management.
This year too IIT is proud to announce the winners of the Informatics International Limited Award for Business Innovation.
