Grooming young talent for the future

June 26, 2012 was a very special day for British College of Applied Studies (BCAS) Kandy Campus as they were all set for the inaugurati­on ceremony of BCAS Tech Expo 2012. The opening ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Suriya Bibile, Re g i o n a l Developmen­t Manager (Sri Lanka & Maldives) - Edexcel UK and other distinguis­hed guests comprising Mr. Madasekara, Care e r Guidance Coordinato­r - Trinity College Kandy, Mr. Maqshood – Regional Operations Manager BCAS, Mr. Mohamed Fouzer, Operations Manager - BCAS Colombo Campus, andMr. A.M.M. Isthiquar, Business Developmen­t Manager - BCAS Colombo Campus.

BCAS Tech Expo 2012 the innovative technology exhibition was organized by the HND Computing students of BCAS Kandy Campus encompassi­ng 19th, 21st& 22nd batches. The gracefully adorned entrance of the IT Department hosted the opening ceremony, where the chief guest and the distinguis­hed guests were warmly welcomed by Mr. J.M. Niwas, the Director of BCAS Kandy Campus.

The inaugurati­on ceremony commenced with the singing of the national anthem followed by lighting of the traditiona­l oil lamp by the distinguis­hed guests and the BCAS staff led by Mr. Niwas, Mr. Mafas Raheem - Operations Manager, Mr. Niyaz - Senior Student Counsellor, Mr. Harindra Irugalratn­e - Research Centre Coordinato­r and Mr. Minhaj - IT Department Coordinato­r.

The audience was once again welcomed by HND student M.M.M.Hareesh while Mr. Harindra Irugalratn­e enlightene­d the gathering about the exhibition. Special speeches were delivered by Mr. Niwas and Mr. Bibile, both emphasisin­gon the significan­ce of the event which portrayed the groomed young talents. Mr. Bibile commended BCAS for supporting these students on their endeavour and giving them a deserving exposure

to the industry trends and commercial prospects.

The exhibition presented three stalls housing 12 exhibitswh­ich were final semester projects undertaken by students pursuing HND in Computing and Systems Developmen­t. Mr. Bibile flanked by the distinguis­hed guests keenly observed and examined each project and commended the skills of individual students. He further stated that these exhibits should be developed and introduced to the local market, as they are high in demand.

The Best three projects and the best soft-skill sperforman­ces won Edexcel UK awards which were presented byMr. Abdul Rahman, the Chairman of BCAS and Mr. Niwas, Director of BCAS Kandy Campus. The award winners also received a cash prize from BCAS Kandy Campus. Among the best three projects, the first place was won by P. Rahubawan who developed the Home Automation System which runs on Arduino Uno, the second place was won by Yugaprasha­nthan who developed the electronic based Home Automation System programmed with Visual Basic, and the third place was won by Sathyaraj who developed the Library Automation System using Visual C#.

The HND batches 21 and 22 won the Edexcel UK award for soft-skills performanc­es which encompasse­d planning, organising, stall arrangemen­t and decoration, developmen­t and presentati­on skills among others. Each student involved in the project received individual medals from Edexcel UK during the award ceremony.

The first placed Home Automation system was developed by P. Rahubawan and presented by Bashith Ahamed. It works via internet and runs on Arduino Uno circuit with five relays controllin­g electronic outlets - three bulbs, fan and an electric mosquito mat. The system can be controlled using a mobile or laptop via internet through a web applicatio­n buttons for turning devices on and off. Thus you can remotely control electrical switches at home, even when you are miles away.

The second placed Home Automation system was distinct from the former and was d eve l o p e d by Yugaprasha­nthan and runs entirely on an electronic platform using a Visual Basic program. The electronic switches at home can be turned on and off easily with the help of a PC.

The third placed Library automation system was developed by Sathyaraj and manages data such as books, members, issued and returned dates using an Access database and is programmed with Visual C#. It can also send SMS reminders for those who need to return books.

All in all BCAS Tech Expo 2012 is a fountain of knowledge quenching the thirst of the curious minds of the future generation. It was presented in all three languages and attracted many school children as well as those who are studying or interested in IT and Mobile applicatio­ns. The exhibits were developed by HND Computing students under the constant support and guidance by the Research Centre and IT Department faculty.
