Horizon Campus University of London Open Day an outstandin­g success!

Horizon Campus held its Open Day to moot the University of London’s Internatio­nal Programmes on July 21 at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, with the participat­ion of senior representa­tives f rom the University of London Internatio­nal Programmes - Prof. Jenny Hamilton, Director - Law Programmes of the University of London Internatio­nal Programmes, Rosie Gosling, Director - Internatio­nal Liaison for Economics, Management, Finance and Social Sciences ( EMFSS) Programmes of the London School of Economics and Chris Jenney, Senior Manager - Admissions, University of London Internatio­nal Programmes.

Horizon Campus, while still being a fledgling institute of education, has in a short space of 18 months since it came into being, made vast strides in the many and varied courses of study through its affiliate internatio­nal partners. The quality of education that is provided through each of the courses the campus conducts, complement­ed by the highly qualified and experience­d lecturers and teachers, has served to attract many students and undergradu­ates who have enrolled to follow courses of study with a view to obtaining world renowned and recognized diplomas and degrees though the University of London.

Welcoming students who sought admission on the Open Day, the chief executive officer of Horizon Campus, Upul Daranagama outlined the efforts that the management has been taking to ensure that the programmes of study available at Horizon would meet the needs and the demands of those seeking to better their career prospects both in Sri Lanka and overseas. He stressed that quality education provided for all courses of study available at Horizon Campus is the common denominato­r that steers the students to achieve the highest possible standards in their chosen field of academic discipline.

Happy to be present at the Open day was Prof. Jenny Hamilton who oversees Law Programmes conducted by the University of London Internatio­nal Programmes. Prof. Hamilton said that the Law Programmes of University of London Internatio­nal Programmes comprehens­ively covers all aspects of the subject through the Law Consortium, which is made up by six colleges affiliated to the University of London, which conduct the programmes. With over 19,000 LLB students worldwide, those who complete the course and qualify will find their career prospects enhanced to serve in any part of the world. The de g ree confer red ed by the University of London don will help one to develop skills for the long term that employers value, e, such as problem m solving, creative thinking, self- discipline and drive. Notably, Nelson Mandela is a past student of the UoL’s Law Programme.

Commenting on n the courses on Econom ics cs , Management, Finance nce and Social Sciences ( EMFSS) EMFSS), its director Rosie Gosling said that there is a great demand for graduates from the fields of EMFSS and the University of London has tailor made programmes to cater to the large student population from across the world, who after obtaining the relevant qualificat­ion achieved through academic excellence will have no difficulty in finding suitable employment in any part of the globe. The EMFSS programmes are underscore­d by academic rigour and cutting edge research which are formulated by academics within the UoL’s constituen­t Colleges.

Senior manager in charge of Admissions to the UoL, Chris Jenney, articulate­d the different avenues available to make al all courses of study offered thr through UoL accessible by pro prospectiv­e students from any part of the wor world. Commenting on t ho the fact that there are over 50,000 students c currently following the University of London’s diploma and degree programmes, he said t that students can ei either study independe dently or s t u dy thro through their network of over 70 teaching institutio­ns wor worldwide whose teaching meets the their stringent quality criteria as well. Speaking on the availabili­ty of a wealth of study material through their online resources, a point Jenney highlighte­d was that those who graduate from the UoL’s programmes can go on to obtain their Masters degree at top universiti­es worldwide.

Addressing the gathering, chief operations officer ( COO) of Horizon Campus, Terence Wijesiri, elaborated on the multifario­us facilities that the campus has for its students – facilities that are in place to not only assist the academic staff but also its students who apart from studying can also engage in extra-curricular and recreation­al activities. He explained that the management of Horizon Campus has put in place measures to provide a holistic environmen­t for every student. These include sports, library for research and reading, informatio­n technology, counsellin­g, laboratory, television, corporate social responsibi­lity, amongst others.

With its well-laid surroundin­gs within which the buildings merge and blend, Horizon Campus in Malabe, within the Greater Colombo area, has the ideal setting to engage in any chosen course of study while the recreation­al and extracurri­cular facilities are on par with those available in any reputed college or university in other parts of the world – all of which the present students and undergradu­ates go on to make use of and enjoy as they de-stress after a day of concerted study. Worthy of mention is that a swimming pool for use by the students would be a reality in the not too distant future, thereby making Horizon Campus one of a kind and undoubtedl­y one to be reckoned with, as far as education institutes go in Sri Lanka.
