- College Crest Present Principal Mrs.m.h.wanigasinghe. Sujatha Balika M.V. Board of Prefects The Students who won the mathematics competition

Sujatha was born under the concept of Matara Buddhist Association in 1929. Before shifting to the present premises the school was located in a piece of flat coconut plantation at the junctions bordered by the Hakmana Road leading to Veragampita, presently occupied by the Department of Agriculture.

The infant girls’ school was given the noble name of ‘ Sujatha’. Unlike today boys under 10 years were admitted and were allowed to remain at this school only till they were 10 years old. At the beginning there were 36 students and the teaching staff consisted of 04. All the students and teachers were Buddhist. The society introduced by Mrs. A. E. Mathives who came from India, was the first Principal of the school.

The medium of instructions was English as was the fashion till 1945 when all schools had to start to revert to the vernaculars. Sinhala language was naturally taught as a subject. The institution, opened thus, progressed rapidly with the unstinted, generous backing and co- operation of the council members, the nobility and well- wishers. As the number of pupils on roll increased more space and many other amenities were required. More stalwarts became necessary to support the weight of the school.

With the amazing rise in the attendance of the school other necessities also emerged forcing the authorities to take steps to move the school to larger premises. In 1932, Sujatha Vidyalaya was shifted to a more spacious but antiquated house called “Mohotti Walawwa” on Gabadaweediya.

With the courage and strength of early Sujathians, it wasn’t a trouble to overcome obstacles. As a result of that, in 1958 Sujatha Vidyalaya became a government school. As the years went by and the attendance increased, the primary section had to be shifted to Welegoda, housing them in buildings that already existed there. Now it has progressed immensely.

At present, there are classes from Grade 1 to Grade 5 and accommodate about 1500 students with 42 teachers. The secondary school houses more than 4800 students and 175 teachers. The present principal is Mrs. M.H. Wanigasinghe.

Sujatha B. M. V. is presently one of the leading schools in the country which has marked outstanding achievements in the academic field. The Grade 5 scholarship examination results always bring honour to the school with the highest number of passes among in the Matara District. In 2011, 75 students of this school got through the examination.

G. C. E. ( O/ L) section is an asset to the school which always produces extraordinary achievements and brings island level ranks with more than 96% being qualified for their Advanced Level. In 2010 Hasini O. Weerasinghe was ranked seventh in the and in 2011 H. G. Hiruni Udara and P.M.Dilini Tharika gained island fifth and seventh places in the G. C. E.( O/ L) Examination while 51 students bagged 9 A’s which brought a lot of credit to the school.

Also Sujatha B. M. V has produced excellent results in G. C. E.( A/ L) with the help of capable graduate tutors. In 2011 more than 15 students obtained 3 A’s in all three streams and more than 400 students qualify to enter the universities.

Sujatha Vidyalaya has become a real challenge in the field of Games and Sports in Provincial as well as competitions island wide. They have reached the top in athletics. Their students have been selectded to the National Pool of Athletics during the last six years and has been winning championships continuously. Tiluni Menaka took first place in the island for the Shot- Put and participated in the Asian Junior Athletic Meet, 2012. Dilki Sethmini bagged the third place in the National Junior Badminton Championship, 2011. Hiruni Madusara Sellehewa who is a student of the special education unit obtained the Gold medal in the Olympic Games for disabled in 2010. Gayathri P. Wickramage and Dumiduni Yashoda of Sujatha B.M.V. represented the National School Netball Team and took part in the foreign tours and the college Karate team has bagged many victories in recent years.

Extra- curricular activities are given a prominent place with students and the college dancing and music groups bringing in fame to the school in the years 2010 and 2011 by winning the first places at the All Island competitions.

In conclusion, we wish them all success in every sphere to upsurge their activities in order to be the best school in Southern Sri Lanka. May the Sujathians be the exemplary daughters, obliging their Mother Land as valuable inhabitants!
