Ruhuna grads volleyball champs for third consecutiv­e year

- The Men’s Champions, University of Ruhuna, with Coach Nihal Ranaweera

The University of Ruhuna won the men’s Inter- University Volleyball championsh­ip for the third consecutiv­e year, defeating the University of Colombo 29- 27, 25- 21 and 25- 12 while the University of Kelaniya, who were the women’s champions in 2010 and 2011, were dethroned by the University of Colombo 23-25, 25-13, 25- 4, 25- 17 at the 12th InterUnive­rsity Vo l l e y b a l l Championsh­ip, which concluded last Monday (6).

The four- day tournament was hosted by the Department of Physical Education of the University of Ruhuna. The University of Kelaniya and the University of Peradeniya took third spots in both categories.

The Ruhuna University team, led by B. A. C. Weeraseker­a, comprised of W.S.J. Madhusanka, M. K. R. Anuradha, J. M. K. K. Dharmasiri, B. R. N. Saranga, A. G. K. R. Sampath, U. A. U. S. Somarathna, B. S. S. Chamara, K. M. P. Dharshana, V. G. K. H. Wickremasi­ngha, A.A. Laksiri and B.P. Pushpakuma­ra. The team was coached by Nihal Ranaweera.

The University of Colombo’s women’s team was led by Iresha Madhushani Samarasing­ha. The team also included Wasana Sewwandi, Rangika Moramudali, Ishara Senevirath­na, Lakmini Bandara, Vo d h a t h i Bamunu a r a chchi, Chat h u Samaraseke­ra, Chamali Ganegoda, Dharshika Ranasingha, Maya Samadhi, Madhusha Lakshani and R. M. H. C. K. Senevirath­na while Rangika Mahawathth­a was the coach of the side.

The men’s and women’s teams from the Universiti­es of Ruhuna, Moratuwa Uva, Sabaragamu­wa, Peradeniya, Eastern, Colombo, Sri Jayewarden­e pura, Jaf f n a , Rajarata, Kelaniya, Visual and Performing Arts and Wayamba participat­ed. Vice Chancellor Professor Susirith Mendis and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Gamini Senanayaka gave away the awards.
