Ruhuna grads volleyball champs for third consecutive year
The University of Ruhuna won the men’s Inter- University Volleyball championship for the third consecutive year, defeating the University of Colombo 29- 27, 25- 21 and 25- 12 while the University of Kelaniya, who were the women’s champions in 2010 and 2011, were dethroned by the University of Colombo 23-25, 25-13, 25- 4, 25- 17 at the 12th InterUniversity Vo l l e y b a l l Championship, which concluded last Monday (6).
The four- day tournament was hosted by the Department of Physical Education of the University of Ruhuna. The University of Kelaniya and the University of Peradeniya took third spots in both categories.
The Ruhuna University team, led by B. A. C. Weerasekera, comprised of W.S.J. Madhusanka, M. K. R. Anuradha, J. M. K. K. Dharmasiri, B. R. N. Saranga, A. G. K. R. Sampath, U. A. U. S. Somarathna, B. S. S. Chamara, K. M. P. Dharshana, V. G. K. H. Wickremasingha, A.A. Laksiri and B.P. Pushpakumara. The team was coached by Nihal Ranaweera.
The University of Colombo’s women’s team was led by Iresha Madhushani Samarasingha. The team also included Wasana Sewwandi, Rangika Moramudali, Ishara Senevirathna, Lakmini Bandara, Vo d h a t h i Bamunu a r a chchi, Chat h u Samarasekera, Chamali Ganegoda, Dharshika Ranasingha, Maya Samadhi, Madhusha Lakshani and R. M. H. C. K. Senevirathna while Rangika Mahawaththa was the coach of the side.
The men’s and women’s teams from the Universities of Ruhuna, Moratuwa Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Peradeniya, Eastern, Colombo, Sri Jayewardene pura, Jaf f n a , Rajarata, Kelaniya, Visual and Performing Arts and Wayamba participated. Vice Chancellor Professor Susirith Mendis and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Gamini Senanayaka gave away the awards.
