Commercial Bank of Ceylon gains high acclaim for excellent HR Management

Sri Lanka’s largest private bank, the Commercial Bank of Ceylon has been recognized as an excellent Human Resource Management entity in the island .The bank was one of 10 leading corporate entities to be awarded Gold at the 2012 National HRM Awards presented by the Associatio­n of Human Resource Profession­als in partnershi­p with Aon Hewitt, a global HR consultanc­y firm. This is the third consecutiv­e instance in which the Bank won a Gold award under the new criteria set for the awards since 2007, the Bank said. The HRM Awards assess, recognize and felicitate the best Human Resource Management systems and processes among corporate entities of the country. The involvemen­t of a firm of the calibre of Aon Hewitt and a distinguis­hed panel of judges provides the evaluation process more independen­ce, transparen­cy and acceptance. Outlining the achievemen­ts in the HR management , Mr. Isuru Tillakawar­dana, DGM - HR Management, Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC said “Strong HR Processes, continued commitment for the developmen­t of the staff through significan­t investment­s made in this area, strong performanc­e based rewards culture the Bank has developed over the years and the excellent relationsh­ip maintained with the employee organizati­ons/ employee unions, were behind in winning this award.”

He said that the Commercial Bank of Ceylon has a very strong organizati­on culture which fosters career growth of people. The bank provides a very clear career path to the young staff members who join the Bank to the very top of the organizati­on and the Bank is committed to invest in enhancing their knowledge and capabiliti­es. Therefore the staff feels that they have a secure future and what counts is their performanc­e, he added.

The bank also ensures the stability of employees future brought by a very strong organizati­on and it provides great career opportunit­ies and performanc­e based rewards for them.

He noted that their HR policies and strategies are designed to help the Bank to achieve its corporate objectives. There is a close link between HR objectives and corporate objectives. HR works as a strategic partner in helping the business units in achieving their targets and goals. “We look at it as our role to ensure that there is a competent and motivated team of profession­als to take the organizati­on forward” he said.. Commercial Bank recruits young school leavers and develop them all the way to the top management. Therefore the bank becomes their place of higher education as well. “We have not only grown the team, we have also retained them through the years with excellent perks and benefits. Therefore we have a very low staff turnover ratio compared to most businesses.” he said.
