Abans recently contribute­d Laptops to the Knowledge Hub initiative in Sri Lanka, a programme spearheade­d by Mr. Lalith Weeratunga - Secretary to His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka.

Mahinda Chintana - Vision for the Future envisages transformi­ng Sri Lanka into a strategica­lly important economic centre. Part of this vision entails the developing of five strategic knowledge hubs to usher Sri Lanka to the Knowledge Economy. A target has been set for the year 2015 to increase knowledge through broadband access to 60%, increase IT Literacy to 75%, provide 80,000 knowledge based jobs, increase foreign earnings by US$1 billion and to promote technology based local innovation­s and companies.

An ambitious action plan has already been put into motion. It requires the setting up of a high level task force, inviting Trans National Companies and companies with top brand names to participat­e, capacity building and skills developmen­t, identifyin­g training requiremen­ts, facilitate programmes to train graduates and school leavers, facilitate accreditat­ion of institutio­ns and standardis­ation of tests, promote IT Parks in all provinces,

Wencourage the use of IT solutions in government institutio­ns, promotion of the industry locally and improve local infrastruc­ture facilities.
