The Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka held its 9th Graduation Ceremony on 22nd August 2011, at the New BMICH Colombo. This is a memorable year for CMA as it celebrates its 12th year since it commenced operations in 2000.

This occasion was graced by Mr Asite Talwatte, Country Managing Partner of Ernst & Young Sri Lanka and Maldives. Mr. Talwatte stated that CMA Sri Lanka had filled a void by providing an affordable national management accounting qualification, thus giving wider choice and opportunity for students to select their preferred field of study in accounting.

Prof. Mangala Fonseka, Professor of Accounting of the Department of Accounting of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura was the Guest of Honour at this 9th CMA Graduation Ceremony. President of CMA Sri Lanka, Prof. Lakshman Watawala conveyed to the recipients, guests, and parents, that CMA had made a significant contribution to the Management Accounting Profession in Sri Lanka. He thanked CMA Canada for their assistance from the inception, and for their technical assistance and support to continuously maintain high standards, providing international recognition to CMA Sri Lanka.

The recipients during this memorable occasion were from the September 2011 and May 2012 examinations. Over 500 students received certificates and over 60 received their CMA Membership. There were 20 subject prize winners. The coveted Founder President Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala Gold Medal for Best Overall Performance in the September 2011, and May 2012 examinations were awarded to Miss H.L.A.S. Danushka and Mr. W.G.I. Kalhara respectively.

The Institute of Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Sri Lanka was incorporated by Parliament Act No.23 of 2009 in April 2009. CMA is the National Professional Management Accounting Institution in Sri Lanka. Since its inception in 2000, CMA has steadily progressed to an Institute comprising over 15000 students and 2000 Members. As a National Management Accounting Body, CMA provides education in the English, Sinhala & Tamil media.

The steady progress of CMA during the past 12 years is attributed to the importance of promoting Management Accounting in business organizations, provision of a business qualification, the affordability of the professional programme, making it available to urban and rural students, and its recognition by local universities and global management accounting institutes.
