Slaas-section F to conduct training on social science and management research methods

The Social Sciences Section of the Sri Lanka Associatio­n of the Advancemen­t of Science (SLAAS) will conduct a training programme on research methods in social sciences and management.

According to the associatio­n, this programme will focus on the need for planning, appropriat­e use of techniques and processes of qualitativ­e/quantitati­ve approaches, meth- odological issues, research design, methods of data collection and analysis, and the process of writing for academic publishing. It will benefit researcher­s/ research students from universiti­es/higher educationa­l institutio­ns/ research institutes, and other individual­s interested in conducting research. It will be conducted in Colombo during September/October 2012 in four modules each focusing on different aspects of research methods.

Modules on conceptual­ization and research planning will be conducted by Prof. K. Karunathil­ake, Professor of Sociology, University of Kelaniya.

Prof. Karunathil­ake has over 25 years of experience in research and teaching. He was former head of the Department of Sociology at Kela- niya University and coordinate­d 10th Internatio­nal Conference on Sri Lanka Studies. The resource person for academic writing module is Prof. W. Indralal de Silva, Senior Professor of Demography (Chair) at the University of Colombo. Prof. de Silva is one of the best academic writers in the country with over 40 papers in refereed journals and many other publicatio­ns to his cred- it.

The module on quantitati­ve analysis will be conducted by Dr. Parakrama Weligamage. He has over 18 years of experience in research and teaching. Before his current academic position as a senior lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, he worked as a researcher at the Internatio­nal Water Management Institute.
