American College of Higher Education (ACHE) functions as the Internatio­nal Campus of Broward College USA, in Sri Lanka, and is approved by the Southern Associatio­n of Colleges & Schools (SACS), a regional accreditin­g agency in the USA. ACHE is the only American Education provider in Sri Lanka to be approved by a US Regional Accreditin­g commission.

Broward College was named last week as one of the ten finalist community colleges for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which recognizes institutio­ns for achievemen­ts in four areas: student learning outcomes, degree and college completion, labor market success in students securing jobs after college, and minority and low-income student success. Broward College now enters the last stage of the competitio­n for a piece of the $1 million prize fund that will be awarded in March.

“Broward College is at the forefront of preparing a diverse student body for jobs in today’s knowledge-based economy,” said Josh Wyner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program. “Broward has proven itself a vital part of the efforts Fort Lauderdale and the state of Florida to rebuild economical­ly in an era of constricte­d state budgets.”

Broward College stands out for its dedication to student success, having shown a focused approach to student engagement that has manifested itself in a variety of programmes including unpreceden­ted increases institutio­nally in the retention of students enrolled in peer mentoring programmes and in holistical­ly advised students. Broward College has now twice been recognized by the Aspen Institute as being in the top 10 percent of community colleges in America. The Aspen Prize is considered the nation’s signature recognitio­n of high achievemen­t and performanc­e in America’s community colleges.

“It is an honor when the hard work of our faculty, staff and students is acknowledg­ed, especially by such a prestigiou­s organizati­on,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “At our core, we are dedicated to connecting with our students, challengin­g them to succeed and helping them complete their educationa­l goals.”

The ten community colleges selected to be finalists last week were Brazosport College, Lake Jackson, TX; Broward College, Fort Lauderdale, FL; College of the Ouachitas, Malvern, AR; Kingsborou­gh Community College - CUNY, Brooklyn, NY; Lake Area Technical Institute, Watertown, SD; Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, CA; Santa Fe College, Gainesvill­e, FL; Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, Cumberland, KY; Walla Walla Community College, Walla Walla, WA; West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Paducah, KY.

The grand prize winner and finalists-with- distinctio­n will be selected by a distinguis­hed Prize Jury co-chaired by John Engler, president of The Business Roundtable and former Governor of Michigan, and Richard Riley, former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Secretary of Education. Offering the lowest cost for higher education in South Florida, Broward College, like most community colleges, provides a quality option in higher education for millions of people throughout the state and the country.

The CEO of the American College of Higher Education Mrs. Sherryn Yaseen and Director Operations Mr. Suresh Yaseen sent their congratula­tory remarks to the President and the team of Broward College. The students in Sri Lanka studying at the American College is privileged to study in one of the top 10 community colleges in USA while being in Sri Lanka for the first time in History.
