Out of the students who sit the GCE A/L examinatio­n only around 10% can find places in the public sector universiti­es in all the fields.This has created frustratio­n among the youth and they wondered aimlessly without being able to continue their higher studies. IDM having identified this problem way back in 1981 has introduced alternate ways of providing higher education to those who could not enter the traditiona­l university system by starting up the first private sector computer school in Sri Lanka. According to the founder chairman of IDM, Dr. Bandu Ranasinghe, IDM has introduced many programmes in IT and Management to help school leavers to qualify & get into employment of their choice

IDM introduced new programmes progressiv­ely since 1981 to match the needs of the time. Some of such programmes were: Profession­al qualificat­ions in IT through BCS & ACS, Academic Qualificat­ions though NCC Education (UK), HND through Edexcel- UK, IHD through EdHat Internatio­nal- UK, Degree programmes through London Metropolit­on University­UK, University of Wolverhamp­ton- UK, University of Greenwich- UK and Trade certificat­ion through Microsoft, Oracle, Java, A+, CISCO etc. Most of these programmes were introduced to Sri Lanka by IDM. According to Mr. Lionel Perera, Director of Studies, this model has benefitted the IT industry by providing the human resource requiremen­ts and this model is being currently used by many training institutio­ns in Sri Lanka. Mr. Perera further stated that Dr. Ranasinghe has taken several initiative­s which contribute­d immensely to develop the IT industry such as; Founded ACTOS, reactivate­d the formation of BCS Sri Lanka Section, initiated the Best Quality Software Awards competitio­n, introduced National Schools Software Competitio­n projects.

IDM’s main objective is to provide tertiary education to the school leavers. IDM has introduced Edexcel HND programme at an affordable fee with easy installmen­t payments. Many B.Sc (Hons) degree programmes are available for those who have successful­ly completed the HND. All these degree programmes are recognized internatio­nally in addition to being recognized by UGC Sri Lanka. These degree programmes are conducted on part time basis providing opportunit­ies for those who are working. Continuous assessment of students are done through assignment­s, group and individual projects, exams and presentati­ons. Assignment­s and projects are so designed to assess the capability of students to apply the theories that they learn in the class room.
